Polypodium View in CoL L., Sp. Pl. 2: 1082. 1753.
Most species currently placed in the family Polypodiaceae were originally described in the genus Polypodium (type: P. vulgare L., from Europe). In the last few decades, as better morphological and molecular data became available, distinct genera ( Adetogramma , Campyloneurum , Pecluma , Pleopeltis , Serpocaulon ) have been separated from the extremely heterogeneous original genus, reducing the number of species in Polypodium to only about 30. Most of these species occur in north-temperate regions and in Mexico, diminishing in number through Mesoamerica. No species belonging to Polypodium s.s. remain in Bolivia. The two Bolivian species most recently placed in this genus, Polypodium chrysolepis and P. dulce , are treated herein in Adetogramma and Pecluma , respectively.
