Distribution. Western Atlantic: Caribbean Sea (Lesser Antilles, Venezuela) to Brazil (Pará, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Sergipe, Bahia , São Paulo); Eastern Atlantic: São Tomé ( Almeida et al. 2013b; Almeida et al. 2014; Barros-Alves et al. 2015; present study).

Remarks. Alpheus buckupi was previously recorded from Ceará based on a colour photograph in the original description by Almeida et al. (2013b). This species is now confirmed from this state, based on material from Barroquinha (Praia de Bitupitá), Caucaia (Praia do Pacheco), Fortaleza (Rio Ceará), Cascavel (Praia da Caponga) and Icapuí (Praia de Requenguela).

One of the colour photographs published by Almeida et al. (2013b: fig. 4F) shows a male specimen of Alpheus buckupi , with the collection locality given as “Lagarto Beach, São Tomé ”. However, a verification of the collection data and all photographs of A. buckupi taken by the second author (AA) revealed that this specimen was collected at Praia da Caponga, Cascavel, Ceará (material deposited in OUMNH), and not in São Tomé. The male specimen from Praia Lagarto, São Tomé ( Fig. 3 D, E) shows indeed a great resemblance to the specimen from Praia da Caponga ( Fig. 3 A), which may explain an accidental mislabelling of photographic files and the resulting locality error in Almeida et al. (2013b). In the present study, A. buckupi is also reported for the first time from the Lesser Antilles in the eastern Caribbean Sea, based on material from Guadeloupe ( Fig. 3 C).
