Material examined. Brazil, Ceará: 1 male, 1 female, LIMCE-UFC 894, Paracuru, Rio Curu estuary, mud flat, in burrows, suction pump, coll. P.P.G. Pachelle & H. Matthews-Cascon, 29.iv.2014; 1 male, LIMCE-UFC 895, same collection data; 1 ov. female, LIMCE-UFC 896, same collection data; 1 ov. female, MZUSP 32649, same collection data [fcn PP 14-048]; 1 male, MZUSP 32611, same collection data [fcn PP 14-049].

Distribution. USA (Florida, Texas), Gulf of Mexico and Brazil (Ceará, Pernambuco, Sergipe, Bahia , São Paulo, Paraná) (Coelho et al. 2007; Rosa & Almeida 2012; present study).

Remarks. The record of Axianassa australis in Ceará represents the northern-most point in the distribution range of the species in Brazil. The burrows of A. australis may occasionally harbour the “commensal” alpheid shrimp Leptalpheus axianassae (see above).
