Diagnosis. Pygofer ( Fig. 21 View FIGURES19–27 ) with dorsoapical lobe narrow and curved ventrally, horn-shaped. Style, in lateral view ( Fig. 24 View FIGURES19–27 ), slightly broadened medially, apical third strongly curved dorsally. Aedeagus ( Figs 26, 27 View FIGURES19–27 ) with shaft strongly flattened dorsoventrally; with pair of short and narrow preapical lateral processes and pair of stout medial lateral processes; shaft also with digitiform dorsal preapical process.
External morphology. Male holotype: length 7.2 mm, male paratype: length 6.9 mm. External characteristics as in generic description.
Male terminalia. Pygofer, in lateral view ( Fig. 21 View FIGURES19–27 ), subtriangular, length approximately twice height; dorsal margin slightly convex and declivous posteriorly; ventral margin sinuous at basal half and rectilinear at apical half; setae distributed on apical two-thirds; dorsoapical lobe narrow and curved ventrally, horn-shaped; ventroapical lobe small and rounded. Subgenital plate, in lateral view ( Fig. 22 View FIGURES19–27 ), with dorsal margin slightly concave; in ventral view ( Fig. 23 View FIGURES19–27 ), each plate about 4.3 times longer than maximum width; ventral margin with 4–6 macrosetae distributed on apical third. Style, in lateral view ( Fig. 24 View FIGURES19–27 ), with apophysis slightly broadened medially, apical third curved dorsally, apex slightly bilobed; in dorsal view ( Fig. 25 View FIGURES19–27 ), apophysis with external lateral margin convex medially. Connective ( Fig. 25 View FIGURES19–27 ) about half length of style. Aedeagus ( Figs 26, 27 View FIGURES19–27 ) with shaft strongly flattened dorsoventrally; in caudal view ( Fig. 27 View FIGURES19–27 ), broad medially; lateral margins slightly crenulated on apical half; with two pairs of lateral short processes, one pair of narrow preapical processes, ventrally directed, and one pair of stout median processes, posteriorly directed; in lateral view, with digitiform dorsal preapical process, flattened laterally; apex flattened laterally and slightly expanded dorsoventrally; preatrium long, about one-third length of shaft.
Female unknown.
Etymology. The specific epithet, platypenis , combines the Greek “platy”, which means flat, with the Latin “penis”, referring to the flat shape of the aedeagus ( Fig. 26 View FIGURES19–27 ).
Material examined. Holotype male: “ Peru, Huanuco, 5 km W.\ Tingo Maria, Pte. Monzón\ 600m, 9°19’32”S 76°1’47”W \ 26 Oct 2002, R.A.Rakitov\ merc. Vapor light, 02-42.2” ( MUSM). Paratype: 1m: same data as the holotype ( DZRJ).
Remarks. Nelidina platypenis sp. nov. is similar to N. sportula in the shape of the pygofer apex ( Fig. 21 View FIGURES19–27 ). However, the new species can be easily distinguished from other species of the genus by the presence of two pairs of processes on the aedeagus ( Fig. 27 View FIGURES19–27 ).
