Retipenna variegata Brooks, 1986: 67 View in CoL . Type locality: India (Khasi Hills). Holotype in NHML.

Diagnosis. This species is characterized by the head with spots on the gena, the thorax without markings, the dark brown veins in basal areas and gradate series of fore- and hindwings, the median arch of male gonarcus with shallow U-shaped invagination, the long narrow arcessus rounded at base and pointed at tip.

Description. Male. Body length 11.8 m, forewing length 14.7 mm, hindwing length 13.3 mm.

Head yellow, vertex raised. Compound eyes prominent and black. Antennae yellow, scape and pedicel wider than flagellum. Frons and clypeus not marked. Gena marked black spots. Maxillary and labial palpi brownish yellow.

Pronotum anterior margin shorter than posterior margin, mesonotum and metanotum without markings.

Legs with dense setae. Pretarsal claws brown, with basal dilation.

Forewing slightly narrow, dark brown veins present in three areas: veins in basal area, inner gradate series and apical radial crossveins, outer gradates and forking marginal veins. Pterostigma pale brown. Costal area with 20–25 crossveins; 12–15 radial crossveins present. m1 smaller than m2; im ovoid; 10–11 psm-psc crossveins present. c1 smaller than c2, dcc closed. A1 forked, A2 and A3 simple. Inner gradate series with 6–7 crossveins, outer gradate series with 8 crossveins.

Hindwing narrow, apical radial crossveins and gradate series brown. Costal area with 15–17 crossveins; 13–14 radial crossveins and 8 psm-psc crossveins present. Inner gradate series with 6–7 crossveins, outer gradate series with 7 crossveins.

Abdomen with dense setae. Tergum VII and sternum VII subquadrate in lateral view; tergum VIII slightly shorter than tergum VII; sternum VIII fused with sternum IX and with small tubercle near tip; tergum IX fused with ectoproct. Callus cerci ovoid. Gonarcus arcuate, median arch with shallow U-shaped invagination, lateral arms narrow at base and wide at tip; entoprocessus widest at tip; arcessus long, rounded at base and pointed at tip.

Female. Body length 10.0 mm, forewing length 16.0 mm, hindwing length 14.0 mm.

Sternum VII longer than tergum VII; tergum VII subquadrate in lateral view; tergum VIII shorter than tergum VII; tergum IX fused with ectoproct. Callus cerci ovoid. Subgenitale bilobed apically; spermatheca thick, vela extremely short, ventral impression deep, duct long and coiled.

Material. 1♂, China, Yunnan, Yingjiang, Hulukou, 2018.IV ( CAU) ; 1♀, China, Xizang, Mêdog , 777.9 m, 2019.V.30, Rongrong Shen & Yingnan He ( CAU). Distribution. China (Xizang, Yunnan); India (Khasi Hills). Remarks. Brooks (1986) established Retipenna variegata and provided genital information. This species is firstly recorded from China and redescribed .

Diagnosis. Body small to medium-sized. Body length 5.6–8.0 mm, forewing length 7.5–11.3 mm, hindwing length 6.7–9.6 mm. This genus is charactized by the presence of the head usually with black spots on lateral sides of the vertex and the gena, the frons with three pairs of black spots on lateral side and a dark spot at middle, the scape and pedicel usually with brown stripe on the outer side, the pointed terminal palpomere of maxillary and labial palpi, the mesonotum always with brown markings on prescutum and scutum, the pronotum and metanotum usually without markings, the legs with dense setae, the pretarsal claws with basal dilation, the forewing often with brown shadings on gradate series, CuP and posterior margin crossveins, the basally broad costal area, the indistinct pterostigma, the ovoid cell im, the gradates in two divergent rows, the basal crossvein of inner gradate series meeting Psm, the opened cell dcc, the male sternum VIII fused with sternum IX, the median arch of gonarcus usually with projections, the entoprocessus in different shapes and posteriorly with two pairs of long setae on associated membrane, the arcessus widest at middle or at base, the apically bilobed female subgenitale, the thick spermatheca, the extremely long or medium length female vela, the shallow or deep ventral impression, and the long coiled duct.

Distribution. Oriental and Australian regions.
