Webbia elaeagnoides DC.,Prodr. 5: 73 (1836). Vernonia kraussi Sch.Bip. ex Walp., Rep. 2: 947 (1843), as nom. nov. [non Vernonia elaeagnoides H.B.Kunth (1820) ]; Harv. in Harv. & Sond., Fl. Cap. 3: 51 (1865); Oliv. & Hiern. in Fl. Trop. Afr. 3: 276 (1877); Wood, Natal Plants 4 (2) t. 334 (1906). Cacalia elaeagnoides (DC.) O.Kuntze, Rev. Gen. 3: 138 (1898).

Type: [KwaZulu-Natal], ‘ ad Zw. Omsamwubo [ Umzimvubu ] et Omsamculo [ Umzimkulu ]’, Drège 5077 (G-DC—microfiche!, holo.)

Webbia oligocephala DC., Prodr. 5: 73 (1836). Vernonia oligocephala (DC.) Sch. Bip. ex Walp., Rep. 2: 947 (1843); Hilliard, Comp. Natal: 43 (1977); Pope in FZ 6 (1): 97 (1992). V. kraussii var. oligocephala (DC.) Harv. in Harv. & Sond., Fl. Cape 3: 51 (1865). Hilliardiella oligocephala (DC.) H. Rob. in Proc. Biol. Soc. Washington 112: 230 (1999). Type: [KwaZulu-Natal], ‘ad Zw. Omsamculo [Umzimkulu] et Port Natal [Durban]’, Drège 5076 (G-DC—microfiche!, holo.).

[Note: Robinson (1999) and Robinson et al. (2016) treated the species under the name H. oligocephala (DC.) H.Rob. , evidently overlooking the fact that Vernonia kraussii Sch.Bip. ex Walp. (1843) was a new name in Vernonia for Webbia elaeagnoides DC. (1836) , the transfer of which was precluded by the earlier homonym V. elaeagnoides H.B.Kunth (1820) . Harvey (1865) treated W. oligocephala DC.(1836) , which is contemporary with W. elaeagnoides DC. (1836) , as a synonym of V. kraussii Sch.Bip. ex Walp. , thereby establishing priority of the latter when the two taxa are treated as conspecific. There is no impediment to the transfer of the epithet elaeagnoides to Hilliardiella , and it is thus the correct name for the combined taxon in this genus.]

Herbaceous perennial, 0.08–1.0 m tall, with erect annual stems from woody rootstock; stem simple or rarely branching from upper axils, closely or more laxly leafy, striate, densely appressed silvery-silky and gland-dotted; eglandular vestiture of medifixed T-shaped hairs. Leaves subsessile or shortly petiolate, sometimes scattered, rarely with small axillary tufts, ovate-lanceolate to sub-rotund, usually not more than twice as long as broad, (6–)15–30 (–40) × 5–20 (–25) mm, acute to acuminate, base cuneate, margins sometimes undulate, strongly discolorous, upper surface thinly silky or glabrescent and gland-dotted, lower surface gland-dotted and densely appressed silvery-silky with prominently raised pinnate venation, eglandular hairs medified T-shaped; petiole 0.5–2.0 mm long. Capitula corymbose or sometimes sub-umbellate, 15- to 20-flowered. Involucre campanulate, 5–8 mm diam. when pressed; bracts ± 4-seriate, gland-dotted and silvery-grey sericeous-tomentose, purplish at tips; outer two series subulate, 1–2 × 0.5 mm, inner two series oblong-lanceolate, acute to acuminate, 5–6 × 1.0– 1.5 mm. Florets purple, perianth 5–7 mm long, gland-dotted and with appressed hairs on upper part of tube and lobes, lobes 1.5–2.0 mm long. Anthers sagittate with ovate apical appendages. Style 3 mm long, branches 2 mm long. Cypselas sub-cylindric,4- or 5-ribbed, 2–3 mm long, gland-dotted and sericeous; pappus bi-seriate, outer scales 1–2 mm long, inner bristles 4–6 mm long, whitish. Flowering time: August to December. ( Figs. 1D View Fig , 2E View Fig , 3E View Fig and 13 View Fig ).

Distribution and habitat: widely distributed through south-central and southern Africa, where it ranges throughout the northern, central and eastern parts of the subcontinent, from Grootfontein in Namibia through Gaborone in Botswana and across the northern and central provinces of South Africa to Swaziland and southwards through KwaZulu-Natal as far as Kentani in Eastern Cape ( Fig. 14 View Fig ), in dry or rocky grassland or open savanna, from near sea level to 2338 m.

Diagnosis: among the three species of Hilliardiella with silvery-silky vestiture, H. elaeagnoides is distinguished by its relatively short, ovate-lanceolate to broadly ovate leaves, mostly 15–30 mm long and 5–20 mm wide and seldom more than twice as long as wide, and markedly discolorous with the upper surface thinly silky or glabrescent and the lower surface densely silvery-silky ( Fig. 1D View Fig ). Hilliardiella capensis has much narrower leaves, also markedly discolorous but linear to linear-lanceolate, 1–4 mm wide and ericoid with revolute margins, and typically with axillary tufts ( Fig. 1A View Fig ). Hilliardiella aristata , which is very variable in leaf shape, is distinguished by leaves with both surfaces usually more or less equally densely silvery-silky, at most only weakly discolorous ( Fig. 1B View Fig ), and long-attenuate inner involucral bracts that are smoothly or more abruptly narrowed to a bristle-tipped point ( Fig. 2G View Fig ). Intermediates among all three species are known where they are sympatric and may represent introgression but most specimens can be assigned with confidence (see also Hilliard 1977: 42).
