Note: — Weissia tenuirostris View in CoL and W. cylindrica View in CoL were both described in 1827. The said publication date of “Muscologia Britannica, ed. 2” is January 1 st; thus, the former is somewhat older and therefore valid ( Köckinger et al. 2010).

= Didymodon cuspidatus Dozy & Molkenboer (1854: 31) View in CoL Trichostomum cuspidatum (Dozy & Molk.) Dozy & Molkenboer (1859: 96) View in CoL Oxystegus cuspidatus (Dozy & Molk.) P.C. Chen (1941: 143) View in CoL . Type citation: “Habitat insulam Javae, Bryo Decaisnei admixtum Zoll. Nro. 2100”. Type:—[ INDONESIA]. Java: H. Note: —This species was described by Dozy & Molkenboer (1854) based on a single gathering (H. Zollinger 2100) collected by H. Zollinger in Java. The gathering is represented by more than one specimen (syntypes) which are deposited in BM, G, L and PC. The authors did not designate a holotype. All duplicates coincide with the protologue and they do not contradict the guidelines in the ICN. Under equal condition, collection from BM (BM001006329) is here selected as lectotype because the sporophytes are better preserved.

= Tortula stenophylla Mitten (1859: 28) View in CoL Barbula stenophylla (Mitt.) A. Jaeger (1873: 415) View in CoL Trichostomum stenophyllum (Mitt.) In mont. Nilghiri, Foulkes ”. Type:—[ INDIA]. Sikkim: 4267 m, J.D. Hooker 159 (lectotype designated by Townsend (1983), here corrected and clarified: BM barcode 001006370!; isolectotypes: BM barcode 001006371!, PC barcode 0101484!), synonymized with Oxystegus cylindricus View in CoL (here C. tenuirostre View in CoL ) by Saito (1975).

Note: — Tortula stenophylla View in CoL was described by Mitten (1859) based on two gatherings (J.D. Hooker 159 and R. Foulkes) collected in India. In BM-Wilson herbarium, there are two specimens of J.D. Hooker 159 (BM001006370 and BM001006371), which are mounted in close proximity. Townsend (1983) proposed as lectotype of this name the material from BM, but he did not indicate which one was the lectotype. He may have regarded them a single collection, although according to Ellis (pers. comm.), they are two different materials. Therefore, there is a lack of clarity in precisely what specimen Townsend designated as lectotype. For that reason, here it is specified as lectotype BM barcode 001006370, which has a handwriting annotation from Townsend.

= Trichostomum subcirrhatum Hampe (1874: 133) View in CoL . Type citation: “Dr. A Glaziou in vicinia Urbis Rio de Janeiro lecti... Nr. 6363”. Type:— [ BRAZIL]. Rio de Janeiro, A.F.M. Note: —This species was described by Brotherus (1894) based on a single gathering (C. Holst 1079) collected by C. Holst in Tanzania. The gathering is represented by more than one specimen (syntypes) which are deposited in BR, H, PC and S. The author did not designate a holotype. All duplicates coincide with the protologue and they do not contradict the guidelines in the ICN. Material from H-BR herbarium is here chosen as lectotype to prioritize the author´s herbarium.

= Leptodontium subintegrum Brotherus (1897: 239) View in CoL Trichostomum subintegrum (Broth.) Brotherus (1902: 394) View in CoL . Type citation: “Seegebiet: Ru-Nssóro, an Steinen im Walde 7000 − 8600’ (Scott Elliott n. 185)”. Type:—[ UGANDA]. Rwenzori, S. Elliot 185 (lectotype designated here: H-BR No. 4297015!; isolectotypes: BM barcode 000878164!, S No. B173434), syn. nov.

Note:—This species was described by Brotherus (1897) based on a single gathering (S. Elliot 185) collected by S. Elliot in Mountain Rwenzori. There are three duplicates (syntypes) of this material deposited in BM, H-BR and S. The author did not designate a holotype. All duplicates coincide with the protologue and they do not contradict the guidelines in the ICN. Material from H-BR NO. 4297015 is here chosen as lectotype to prioritize the author´s herbarium.

= Barbula leptotortuosa Müller (1898: 179) View in CoL Trichostomum leptotortuosum (Müll.Hal.) Brotherus (1902: 394) View in CoL Oxystegus leptotortuosum (Müll.Hal.) Hilpert (1933: 667) View in CoL . Type citation: “China interior, prov. Schen-si sept., in monte Tui-kio-san, Oct. 1896, c. fr. supramaturis”. Type:— CHINA. Schen-si sept.: mount Tui-Kio-san, 20 October 1896, G. Giraldi s.n. (lectotype designated here: H-BR No. 4299008!), synonymized by Chen (1941).

Note: —The species was described by Müller (1898) based on material from China. The original herbarium of Müller in B was destroyed in World War II. There are some duplicates of his collections housed at different herbaria. Two collections of Barbula leptotortuosa View in CoL match the protologue. They were located at H-BR and BM. Collection from H-BR is co-specific with C. tenuirostre View in CoL , but collection from BM belongs to the genus Trichostomum sensu Alonso et al. (2016b) View in CoL . The original description of B. leptotortuosa View in CoL does not mention the characters that separate both species, and consequently it would match either of them. In order to maintain the current use of B. leptotortuosa View in CoL as synonym of C. tenuirostre ( Chen 1941) View in CoL , collection from H-BR is selected as the lectotype of this name. The epithets of Barbula leptotortuosa View in CoL was originally hyphenated as “lepto-tortuosa”. It is corrected here to “leptotortuosa View in CoL ” according to Art. 60.11 of the ICN ( Turland et al. 2018).

= Trichostomum prionodon Müller (1898: 91) View in CoL . Type citation: “Brasilia, Serra Itatiaia, ad saxa rupestria in Capao, 2000 m. altum, Martio 1894: E. Ule, Coll. 1812”. Type :— BRAZIL. Serra Itatiaia, 2000 m, March 1894, E. Ule 1812 (lectotype designated here: HBG barcode 021653!; isolectotypes: H-BR No. 4298010!, S No. B180551 !), syn. nov.

Note: —This species was described by Müller (1898) based on a single gathering (E. Ule 1812) collected by E. Ule in Brazil. As said above, Müller´s herbarium at B was destroyed but, three syntypes of this collection were found in H-BR, HBG and S. All duplicates coincide with the protologue and they do not contradict the guidelines in the ICN. Since none of them has any Müller´s annotation, the sample from HBG is chosen as lectotype since it includes more material and presents more sporophytes.

= Barbula leptotortella Müller (1899: 110) View in CoL Trichostomum leptotortella (Müll.Hal.) Brotherus (1902: 394) View in CoL Oxystegus leptotortella (Müll.Hal.) Hilpert (1933: 667) View in CoL . Type citation: “Prom. bonae spei, Somerst East, Mte. Boschberg, Prof. Mac Owan lg. et mis 1878”.

Type:—[ SOUTH AFRICA]. [Cape of Good Hope]: Mt. Borschberg, M. Owan s.n. (lectotype designated here: H-BR No. 4297017!), synonymized with Oxystegus cylindricus (here C. tenuirostre ) by Gangulee (1969).

Note: — This species was described by Müller (1899) based on material collected by M. Owan in South Africa. Since Müller´s herbarium at B was destroyed, duplicates of this name were searched in several herbaria. A specimen collected by M. Owan in the same locality was found at H in Brotherus´ Herbarium. This is in accordance with the protologue. No other original material is available therefore ; we have selected it as lectotype. The epithet of this species was originally hyphenated as “lepto-tortella”. This is corrected here to “leptotortella ” according to Art. 60.11 of the ICN ( Turland et al. 2018) .

= Trichostomum fallax Herzog (1909: 62) View in CoL Oxystegus fallax (Herzog) Hilpert (1933: 620) View in CoL . Type:— BOLIVIA. [Cochabamba]: Cuesta de Duraznillos, 2600 m, December 1907, T. Herzog s.n. (lectotype designated here: JE barcode 04002493!), syn. nov.

Note: —This species was described by Herzog (1909) based on his own material collected in Bolivia. In the original description, two localities were cited: “Tobel der Cuesta de Duraznillos (Prov. Cochabamba)” (JE04002493) and “Estradilla bei Incacorral (Prov. Cochabamba)” (JE04002492). Both of them were housed in JE herbarium, where Herzog herbarium is kept. They have the same sizes and no sporophytes. The lectotypification is made on the material collected in “Cuesta de Duraznillos” (JE04002493) which is better preserved.

= Trichostomum siamense Brotherus (1911: 362) View in CoL . Type citation: “Sämtliche Arten stammen von der Gipfelregion des Doi Sutäp , zwischen 1660 und 1675 m ü. d. M. und sind liebenswürdigerweise von Prof. Brotherus in Helsingfors bestimmt”. Type:—[ THAILAND]. Doi Sutäp, 1650 − 1700 m, 13 December 1904, C.C. Hosseus s.n. (lectotype designated here: H-BR No. 4299018!; isolectotype: H-BR No. 4299021!), syn. nov.

Note: —This species was described by Brotherus (1911) based on material collected by C. C. Hosseus in Thailand. Two specimens deposited in Brotherus´s herbarium ( H-BR 4299018 and H-BR 4299021) coincide with the protologue. After examined them, the sample H-BR No. 4299018 is selected as lectotype because it is significantly larger.

Herzog 4919/a (holotype: JE04006991!), synonymized by Zander (1993).

= Trichostomum parvulum Brotherus (1924: 564) View in CoL . Type citation: “Prov. Yünnan bor.-occid.: Prope pagum Yungning, in regionis temperatae terra abrupta arenacea montis Hoörl; ca. 3000 m (Nr. 3132)”. Type:—[ CHINA]. Yünnan: Yungning, Mt. Hoörl, 3000 m, 20 June 1914, H.R.E. Handel-Mazzetti 3132 (lectotype designated here: WU No. 0045731!; isolectotypes: H-BR No. 4299005!, S No. B180554!, W No. 1925-0003669), synonymized by Li et al. (2001).

Note: —This species was described by Brotherus (1924) based on a single gathering (H.R.E. Handel-Mazzetti 3132) collected by H.R.E. Handel-Mazzetti in Yünnan, China. There are three duplicates of this exsiccate series which were identified by Brotherus and housed in different herbaria (H-BR, W and WU). Moreover, a duplicate of the exsiccate likely handwriting by Brotherus is deposited in J. Froehlich herbarium at S. Therefore, among these syntypes, a lectotype needs to be designated. Collection from S and H-BR are very scarce, whereas collection from WU is slightly abundant and its sporophytes are in better condition. That is why, the latest is here selected as lectotype.

= Pseudosymblepharis indica Dixon & Pottier de la Varde (1927: 166) View in CoL Oxystegus indicus (Dixon & P. de la Varde) Hilpert (1933: 702) View in CoL . Type citation: “Tiger Shola, Southern Ridge, Kodaikanal, 1926 (Nº 251)”. Type:— INDIA. [Tamil Nadu]: Palni Hills, Tiger Shola, Southern Ridge, Perumalmalai, 1828 m, 9 April 1926, G. Foreau 251 (lectotype designated here: BM barcode 001006365!; isolectotypes: MO No. 3960946!, PC barcode 0147030!), synonymized by Aziz & Vohra (2008).

Note: —This species was described by Dixon & P. de la Varde (1927) based on a single gathering (G. Foreau 251) collected by G. Foreau in India. The gathering is represented by more than one specimen (syntypes) which are deposited in BM, MO and PC. The authors did not designate a holotype. All duplicates coincide with the protologue and they do not contradict the guidelines in the ICN. Material from BM belongs to Dixon´s herbarium, whereas material from PC belongs to P. de la Varde´s. Under equal condition, these two collections are priorities because they are in the home institutions of the authors of the name. Collection from BM (BM001006329) is here selected as lectotype because it is slightly better preserved.

= Trichostomum cylindricum var. denticuspis Brotherus (1929: 33) View in CoL . Type citation: “China. NW-Y.: Bei Tschada mit der Art, 2800 m, c. sp. 29.VIII.1915 (7889)”. Type:— CHINA. Yünnan: inter fluvios River Djinscha-djiang (Yangtse) and Landsang-djiang (Mekong), toward Djitsung-Kakatang, 2800 m, 29 August 1915, H.R.E. Handel-Mazzetti 7889 (lectotype designated here: H-BR No. 4303025!; isolectotypes: W No. 1927-0010016, WU No. 0045721), synonymized by Li et al. (2001).

Note: —This species was described by Brotherus (1929) based on a single gathering (H.R.E. Handel-Mazzetti 7889) collected by H.R.E. Handel-Mazzetti in Yunnän, China. H-BR herbarium holds one material from an exsiccate series (H-BR No. 4303025) which exactly matches the protologue. However, this gathering might be represented by more than one specimen. W and WU herbaria housed two more collections (belonging to the same exsiccate series) which match the protologue of T. cylindricum var. denticuspis View in CoL , except for the collection number. The labels of these two samples read 7882, not 7889, likely due to a typing error. Collection from H-BR (H-BR No. 4303025) is here selected as lectotype since it is from the author´s herbarium and, in addition, because it will avoid confusion with the collection numbers.

= Trichostomum fragilifolium Dixon (1930: 117) View in CoL . Type citation: “Conifer forest, near Nanyuki, Mt. Kenya, alt. about 7000 ft., Aug. 1929 (Rendle, 501)”. Type:— KENYA. Near Nanyuki, Mt. Kenya, 2180 m, August 1928, A.B. Rendle 501 (holotype: BM barcode 001006350!), syn. nov.

= Trichostomum uncinifolium Dixon (1942: 180) View in CoL Oxystegus uncinifolius (Dixon) M.N. Aziz & Vohra (2008: 66) View in CoL . Type citation: “Nassim Bagh, Srinagar, Kashmir, Aug. 1922; coll. Mrs. Garrett (2515)”. Type:— INDIA. Nassim Bagh, Srinagar, Kashmir, August 1932, J. Garrett 2515 (holotype: BM barcode 001006369!), syn. nov.

Note: —There is an incongruence between the collection date from the original description (1922) and the date from the label of the type material (1932). Considering other collection numbers of J. Garrett and the year of these collections, it is more likely a typing error in the original description than in the label of the type material. Therefore, we think specimen J. Garrett 2515 was collected in 1932.
