Gandoger’s protologue for R. bourgaeana includes a diagnosis: “A R. lycioide differ habitu humiliore conferte erinaceo-ramosissimo, ramis brevibus divaricates condensatis, foliis 2–3-plo minoribus decidius 4–7 mm. longis nec elongates apice emarginatis obtusis basi abrupte truncates, corolla minore pedunculisque tenuioribus […] Habitu peculiari spinosissimo follisque multo minoribus ovatis nec lineari-oblongis a R. lycioide bene distinguitur”, and the provenance: “Hab. Coma den Arbona ad rupes verticals parce”, which is Coma d’en Arbona, Fornalutx, Mallorca island, Balearic Islands, Spain ( Gandoger 1900: 135). The protologue also includes a reference to an exsiccata, as “ R. lycioides Bourg. , exs. balear., 1869, e loco classico!”
Michel Gandoger (1850-1926) was a French botanist, and his herbarium is currently kept at LY with duplicates in many herbaria ( Stafleu & Cowan 1976). Eugène Bourgeau (1813-1877) was a French botanical traveler, which collected in South and Southwest France, Spain, Algeria, North America and Mexico. The important collections of this author are preserved at P, G and K, and further material in other herbaria. Unfortunately, there is no material of R. bourgaeana at LY (Mélanie Thiebaut, pers. comm.), and the original material of the name R. bourgaeana has not been found ( Rosselló & Sáez 2000, Rivas-Martínez & Pizarro 2011) in any of the consulted herbaria (B, BC, BM, C, FI, G, JE, K, LE, LY, M, MA, MPU, NAP, OXF, P, RO, S, TO, W, WAG).
In conclusion, according to Art. 9.8 of the ICN ( Turland et al. 2018), we designate a neotype for the name Rhamnus bourgaeana . Accordingly, a modern and complete specimen preserved at BC (with number 123587) is designated as neotype, with two duplicate specimens at MA (isoneotypes). This specimen clearly represents the traditional concept and current usage of the name ( Gandoger 1900, Bolòs & Vigo 1989, Rivas-Martínez & Pizarro 2015).
