Native to North America, in recent decades, it has spread widely in tropical and subtropical areas of South America, the Caribbean, southern Africa, southern Europe, Asia and the Pacific; broadly polyphagous, feeding on plants belonging to 33 families; a pest of crops and ornamentals.
