Phaea paralella View in CoL new species
( Figures 5 View FIGURES 5 – 9 ̄9)
Description. Male. Form moderate sized, cylindrical; integument brightly orange-yellowish, basal half diagonally of scape and the rest of antennomeres, clypeus, legs, base of prosternum, mesosternum, metasternum, and abdomen black, with rounded black maculae behind eyes, pronotum with two thin, longitudinal, black vittae on each side of middle and on each side below lateral lobes. Head broad, front almost flat, punctures moderately coarse, well separated, pubescence orange-yellowish, depressed, slightly abundant in front, erect setae sparse at sides, but more abundant on antennal tubercles; vertex very sparsely punctate, long, erect setae sparse; interantennal impression deep; antennae passing the third quarter of the elytra, scape stout, punctation abundant, finely asperate apically, slightly flattened dorsally, scape subequal to antennomere III, fourth antennomere slightly longer than third, antennomeres V̄XI decreasing in size, antennomeres IV–XI densely clothed with short, dark setae, and long, erect setae beneath, becoming sparser toward apex, basal antennomeres bristling dorsally with shorter setae. Pronotum broader than long, sides lobed; apical impression shallow, not extending over disk, basal impression broader and deeper; umbo large, convex, extending completely over the disk, sides not delimited, each side with a longitudinal vitta beginning near the apex and ending close to the base, middle glabrous, sides more densely punctate, sparse, each giving rise to a long, dark, erect seta; pubescence short, sparse, depressed more common on the lateral lobes, with abundant long erect setae sparse on lateral sides of umbo; prosternum narrow, sparsely pubescent with some long, erect setae; mesosternum finely, sparsely punctate, sparsely pubescent, intercoxal process narrow; metasternum finely, sparsely punctate, each puncture with a long seta. Scutellum almost square, with some long orange setae. Elytra about 2.8 times longer than broad, sides very shallowly impressed, apical one-third barely expanded; punctures moderately coarse, linear, smaller and irregular near apex; pubescence dense, moderately long, orange, depressed, base with long, erect orange setae; apices rounded. Legs short; femora almost impunctate; middle trochanters apically produced into a long, acute spine. Abdomen finely punctate except for posterior margins of ventrites one to four; fifth ventrite elongate, truncate at apex. Length, 7.4 mm.
Female. Form slightly more robust. Head with front convex, with a pair of black macula between eyes, near frontal suture (fig. 9). Antennae extending to about second abdominal ventrite. Legs with middle trochanters not modified. Abdomen with fifth ventrite medially impressed. Length, 8.4 mm.
Variation. The length in males is 7–9.3 mm.
Material examined. Holotype male, from MEXICO : Morelos, Tepoztlán, San Andrés de la Cal, Derrame de Lava , 18.947322 N, 99.111459 W, Alt. 1512, Selva Baja Caducifolia , golpeando vegetación, 15-VII-2015, Cols. J. G. Martínez, R. Reyes, Y. Hernández, O. Martínez, A. Hernández ( CIUM). One paratype female with the same data of holotype, the rest with the same data except GoogleMaps : 18.93945 N, 99.11616 W, Alt. 1475, Platos de Colores, Punto 1, 18- VI-2015, Cols. J. G. Hernández (♂). Three paratype males collected recently with the dame data of last paratype, except, 23-VI-2016, Cols. T. Valle, V.H. Toledo, J.G. Martínez, R. Reyes . Paratypes in CIUM, CNIN, LGBC.
Diagnosis. This species shares several characters with Phaea vitticollis Bates, 1872 , such as the modification of the middle trochanters of the males into long spines, which are very distinctive. However, P. parallela is easily recognized by the longitudinal black vitta on each side of the pronotal umbo, and because all the dorsal pubescence and integument is orange-yellowish.
Etymology. The name parallela refers to the parallel black vitta on each side of the thoracic umbo.
