Distribution. Western Atlantic— Belize, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, Suriname, Brazil (Pará, Maranhão, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Sergipe, Bahia, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Santa Catarina) ( Haig 1956; Veloso & Melo 1993; Werding et al. 2003; Rodríguez et al. 2005; Coelho et al. 2007; Ferreira & Melo 2016).
Remarks. Commensal of several echinoderms, especially sea stars of the genus Luigia Forbes, 1839 ( Haig 1956; Gore & Shoup 1968; Veloso & Melo 1993; Melo 1999; Hernández et al. 2005), the species is mainly benthonic but also found, despite less frequently, on sandy bottoms from the intertidal region to 59 m depth ( Melo 1999; Fransozo et al. 2011), probably after detaching from the host. It is the only species of the family included on the Red List of the Brazilian Crustacean fauna ( Mantelatto & Miranda 2016), under the criteria DD (data deficient).
