Distribution. Western Atlantic— USA (Florida), Gulf of Mexico, Mexico, Virgin Islands, Colombia, Venezuela, Trinidad and Tobago, Brazil (Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Bahia, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina); Eastern Pacific— Ecuador, Peru ( Haig 1960; Veloso & Melo 1993; Coelho-Santos & Coelho 1994; Werding et al. 2003; Hiller et al. 2004; Rodríguez et al. 2005; Coelho et al. 2007; Ferreira & Melo 2016).

Remarks. This species is found in symbiosis with bryozoan and polychaete species, as well as on rocky shores ( Gore et al. 1978; Mantelatto & Souza-Carey 1998; Micheletti-Flores & Negreiros-Fransozo 1999; Hattori & Pinheiro 2001; Bosa & Masunari 2002; Leone & Mantelatto 2015) and on mussel farming ropes ( Macedo et al. 2012).
