Stomopogon acuta Malloch, 1934   . New synonymy.

Type-material examined. Lectotype of S. inculta   . Male: “ Chile \ 5. x. 02 \ Arica [green, printed label and partially handwritten, 02 = 1902]”; “ LECTOTYPE ♁ \ Coenosia   \ inculta \ Stein, 1911 \ Des. A. C. Pont 1999 [white printed label]” ( SMT) ( Fig. 20E View FIGURE 20 ). Paralectotypes of S. inculta   , 3♀♀. Same data as lectotype, 2♀♀ ( SMT); Caldera, 25. v. 1903, 1♀ ( SMT). The lectotype is not well preserved. The right mid and hind legs are glued to a piece of cardboard. Holotype of S. acuta   (New synonymy). Female: “ Chile \ DS Bulloch [white printed label]”; “Tocopilla \ ap. 10. 31 \ SeaBeach [ap = April; white, handwritten label]”; “Type No. \ H9865\ U. S. N. M. [red printed label]”; “ Angolia   \ acuta \ Type \ det. Diagnosis. S. inculta   is the only species that has fronto-orbital plate with many setulae ( Figs 20B View FIGURE 20 , 21B View FIGURE 21 , 22B View FIGURE 22 ) and parafacial wider than pedicel apart from S. capribarba   , from which it differs by the yellow pedicel.


Head ( Fig. 20B View FIGURE 20 ). Frontal vitta dark brown; fronto-orbital plate, face, parafacial and gena dense silvery pruinose; proboscis shiny dark brown. Eye bare, distance between eyes 0.40 of maximum head-width. Antenna inserted on middle of eyes, postpedicel brown, about 1.5 times pedicel length. 5 frontal setae, between than 2 less developed; proclinate orbital seta absent; 1 upper orbital seta; ocellar seta well developed; postocellar seta divergent with same ocellar seta length; inner vertical seta parallel with 1.2 times of the ocellar seta length; outer vertical seta divergent and shorter than inner vertical seta. Palpus filiform, a little enlarged at the apex. Gena with strong, long setae.

Thorax ( Fig. 20C View FIGURE 20 ). Acrostichal seta reduced; intra-alar setae 1+1, postsutural reduced; 5 anepisternal setae.

Legs ( Fig. 20A, D View FIGURE 20 ). Black, with fore femur grey pruinose in basal half and yellowish on apical half. Claws and pulvilli well developed. Fore femur with a complete row of setae on pd and pv. Fore tibia with tarsi enlarged, mainly the last one. 1 p seta on median to apical half; 1 d and pd apical seta. Mid femur with 1 av seta on median half. Mid tibia with 1 pd, 1 p and 2 a median seta; apical seta on d, pd, a, v and p. Hind femur with a complete row of long setae on ad; 1 row of 6 long av setae on apical half; 1 d seta on apical half; 2 v setae on median half. Hind tibia with 3 ad, 4 pd and 1 a long setae ( Fig. 20D View FIGURE 20 ); preapical seta on a and v, all well developed.

Abdomen ( Fig. 20C View FIGURE 20 ). Grey, with 4 pairs of subtriangular central spots on all tergites, Sternite 5 not examined.

Terminalia   . Not examined.

Female ( Fig. 21 View FIGURE 21 A–D, 22A–D). Similar to male, but without pairs of subtriangular central spots on all tergites.

Remarks. Stein (1911) described S. inculta   based on male (01) and females (03) from Chile. Years later, Malloch (1934) described S. acuta   based on only one female, also from Chile. Analyzing type specimens of both species, we observed that all external characters of S. inculta   are present in S. acuta   . Also, at couplet 2 of Couri and de Carvalho’s (2002) key, S. inculta   keys out to couplet 4 based on the absence of one anterior to posterior seta on the mid tibia. This, however, is in error, since this seta is present in S. inculta   . Following to the couplet 3, S. acuta   and S. inculta   key out together and share all characters. Based on these observations, we propose the synonym of S. acuta   with S. inculta   .

Distribution. Chile (Arica, Chañaral, Malleco).
