Tanypus Meigen, 1803: 261 View in CoL .
Type species. Tipula cincta sensu Latreille, 1810 [misidentified = Tanypus punctipennis Meigen, 1818 ].
Emended diagnosis. Larva: ligula with 5–6 teeth.
Remarks. Generic diagnoses are given by Roback (1971) and Murray & Fittkau (1989) for the adult; and Roback (1977) and Fittkau & Murray (1986) for the pupa. The diagnoses in Roback (1977), Fittkau & Roback (1983) and Cranston & Epler (2013) for the larva should be emended to accommodate the Neotropical species with an unusual feature for the genus. Concerning the Tanypus pupa, Fittkau & Murray (1986) wrote, “anal lobe reduced, generally slightly broader than long and shorter than segment VIII.” The pupa of the species treated here, however, has well-developed anal lobe, which is much longer than the abdominal segment VIII. The male genital sac is shorter than the anal lobe, and the relative length is much shorter than in T. (T.) stellatus Coquillett (see Roback 1977, figure 70; Fittkau & Murray 1986, figure 5.38 F). These features may change the concept of the Tanypus pupa. This genus is divided into two subgenera, Apelopia Roback and Tanypus s. str. ( Roback 1971, 1977). Cranston & Epler (2013), however, noted that the genus cannot be separated yet in the larval stage.
