TYPE LOCALITY: Canada, Ontario, Hudson Bay, Fort Severn .
DISTRIBUTION: S. Alaska ( U.S.A.) to S. coast Hudson Bay to Labrador ( Canada), south to N. South Carolina, N.W. Alabama, N.E. Oklahoma ( U.S.A.), and S. British Columbia ( Canada). Isolated populations in S. Wyoming, N.C. Colorado, C. New Mexico, and E.C. Arizona ( U.S.A.).
COMMENT: The S. Rocky Mtn. subspecies luteus, formerly assigned to princeps , has been transferred to hudsonius by Hafner et al., 1981, J. Mammal., 62:501-512. Reviewed by Whitaker, 1972, Mamm. Species, 11:1 -7.
