Polistes paraguayensis Bertoni, 1921: 12 View in CoL , ♀.
Diagnosis. Females. Body pigmentation dark brown and reddish-brown, with yellow bands on propodeal area. Wing pigmentation reddish to brown. Intermediate size, about 20 mm in total length. Clypeus slightly wider than long or as long as wide, with short bristles located only in the inferior region, and medium-sized and deep punctures present only in the apical region, apex pointed, dimorphic clypeus-eye, in contact by a width less than the diameter of the antenna socket or be closely separated; central region of the gena smaller than the eyes; occipital carina strong, extending to middle of the eye; humeri not projecting; mesepisternum with short bristles, small and shallow punctation; propodeal concavity widely extended in the center; propodeal striae strong, developed at the most to propodeal margins, sometimes weak on the sides; tergum I as long as wide or a little wider than long, with short and dense bristles, and strong, medium sized, and deep punctures; tergum II wider or as wide as long; short bristles, weakly punctate. Males. Similar to females, except for clypeus widely separated from the eye, about half the width of the antennal socket and the dark brown wing pigmentation.
Material examined. 3♀, 1♂ in total. Paraguay: Porto Bertoni, 2♀ ( IBNP); Villa Rica , 1♀, 1♂ ( AMNH) .
Distribution. Brazil: Mato Grosso; Bolivia; Paraguay; Argentina.
