Polistes ferreri de Saussure, 1853: 77 View in CoL , ♀.
Diagnosis. Female. Body pigmentation reddish brown. Wings pigmentation dark brown to black. Intermediate size, usually 20 mm in total length. Clypeus slightly wider than long or as long as wide, apex rounded, covered by short bristles at its base becoming long toward the apex, and medium-sized and deep punctures present only in the apical region; clypeus-eye touching for an extent equal to or greater than width of antennal socket; gena width at midlength equal to or slightly wider than eye; occipital carina strong, extending through entire gena; humeri not projecting; mesepisternum with short and dense bristles, medium and deep punctation; propodeal com concavity widely extended in the center, propodeal striae strong in the center and weak on the sides; tergum I longer than wide, with short and dense bristles, with strong, medium sized, and deep punctures; tergum II wider or as wide as long, short, and dense bristles, and strong punctures. Male. Similar to females, except for occipital carina with weak margin, extending to eye level, propodeal striae strong all over.
Material examined. 11♀, 2♂ in total. Brazil: Brasília , 1♀ ( NHM); Mato Grosso , 1♀ ( NHM); Pernambuco , 1♀, 1♂ ( MZSP); Rio Grande do Sul , 6♀ ( CESC); Santa Catarina , 1♂ ( AMNH) , ♀ [Lectotype] ( MNHN) , 1♀ ( MNHN) .
Distribution. Brazil: Bahia, Distrito Federal, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Pará, Paraná, Pernambuco; Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, São Paulo; Bolivia; Argentina; Uruguay.
