Polistes consobrinus de Saussure, 1858: 259 View in CoL , ♀, ♂.
Diagnosis. Female. Body pigmentation dark brown. Wings pigmentation reddish to brown. Intermediate size, maximum 18 mm in total length. Clypeus slightly wider than long or as long as wide, covered by short bristles at its base becoming long toward the apex, and medium-sized and deep punctures present only in the apical region, apex pointed, clypeus-eye touching for an extent smaller than width of antennal socket; gena width at midlength equal to or slightly wider than eye; occipital carina strong; humeri slightly projecting; mesepisternum with short bristles, medium and deep punctation; propodeal concavity widely extended in the center, propodeal striae weak; tergum I longer than wide, with short and dense bristles, and strong, medium sized, and deep punctures; tergum II wider than or as wide as long, with short and dense bristles, with corrugation. Male. Similar to the females, except for general body pigmentation reddish to brown, with two yellow bands on the propodeal area, and yellow clypeus with a rounded apex, gena less wide than the eyes, tergum II without corrugations.
Material examined. 15♀, 4♂ in total. Brazil: Rio Grande do Sul , 6♀ ( AMNH) , 6♀, 3♂ ( NHM) , 2♀, 1♂ ( CESC) , 1♀ ( ZSM) .
Distribution. Brazil: Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, São Paulo; Paraguay; Argentina; Uruguay.
