Type species (by original designation): Vespa argentata Fabricius, 1804 .
Archancistrocerus Giordani Soika, 1986b: 143 –146. Type species (by original designation): Archancistrocerus diffinis Giordani Soika, 1986 . Syn. nov.
Diagnosis. Vein 2r-m of fore wing closer to apex of marginal cell than to base of vein 1r-m, the fourth abscissa of the vein Rs usually only about half the length of the third ( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 5–12 ); metanotum (“postscutellum”) at same level as mesoscutum or slightly oblique in lateral view ( Fig. 51 View FIGURES 49–55 ), but never with pronounced declivous posterior part; propodeum medio-anteriorly near level of metanotum ( Fig. 51 View FIGURES 49–55 ) or protruding ( Fig. 29 View FIGURES 27–32 ); T1 often with tendency to form a transverse rim at the junction of the anterior and the dorsal faces (van der Vecht 1963) or having the junction of both faces angular in lateral view; sometimes S2 of ♂ armed with a flattened tubercle, two teeth or a transverse rim ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 3, 4 ); S7 of ♂ with 1–3 teeth ( Fig. 64 View FIGURES 56–65 ), pair of lobes or with a shiny and flat uplifted area ( Fig. 44 View FIGURES 41–48 ); basal lamina of volsella with a long spine ( Fig. 60 View FIGURES 56–65 ).
Notes. After examination of the holotype of Archancistrocerus diffinis Giordani Soika ( Figs 1–2 View FIGURES 1, 2 , 27–32 View FIGURES 27–32 ) and the redescription of the male of Allorhynchium quadrimaculatum Gusenleitner ( Figs 4 View FIGURES 3, 4 , 56–65 View FIGURES 56–65 ), it became obvious that the first species belongs to Allorhynchium van der Vecht. It has the typical distal position of vein 2r-m of the fore wing and a pronounced transverse (medially interrupted) rim on T1, the latter is also present in A. quadrimaculatum ( Fig. 59 View FIGURES 56–65 ). This leaves only the vermiculate-rugose clypeus and the richer yellowish pattern of the body to separate Archancistrocerus from Allorhynchium ; both of these traits are considered too variable within Allorhynchium to be used as generic key characters.
The key below treats the Oriental species (including the southeastern Palaearctic area); both species restricted to Wallacea (Sulawesi and Moluccas) and Australia are excluded. Allorhynchium unifasciatum (von Schulthess, 1934) is reported by Giordani Soika (1986b) from China, but subsequently this species was designated as the genotype of Kennethia (Giordani Soika, 1994) , a junior homonym replaced by Orientalicesa Koçak & Kemal, 2010 . Additional key characters are given in square brackets.
