Trees 2–15 m tall. Twigs glabrous when young. Young leaves glabrous. Leaves with petioles 4–11 mm long, canaliculate, glabrous; blades (60–)100–190 × (25–) 35–70 mm, elliptic, narrow-elliptic or oblong, concolorous when dry, not glaucous and glabrate or glabrous on both surfaces; bases attenuate or acute, sometimes obtuse; apices acuminate; midvein sulcate, sometimes plane or raised, adaxially and raised abaxially, glabrous adaxially and glabrate abaxially; secondary veins 11–18 at each side, raised on both surfaces, the first pair confluent with the marginal vein; marginal veins two, the innermost 2–4 mm from the revolute without thickening margin; oil glands inconspicuous adaxially and slightly raised abaxially. Inflorescences axillary, fascicle, sessile or with peduncle up to 0.5 mm long, rachis up to 1 mm long, glabrous; bracts 1–3 mm long, lanceolate to ovate, glabrous, deciduous at anthesis or just after; 2–4 flowers; pedicels 4–35 mm long, glabrous; bracteoles 1–1.5 mm long, free, lanceolate, apices obtuse, glabrous, not reflexed, persistent in the fruit. Flower buds 3–5 mm in diameter. Flowers with smooth, glabrous hypanthia; calyx lobes 4, free, 2–5 × 2–3.5 mm, ovate or oblong, apices obtuse or rounded, glabrous; petals 4, obovate, oil glands inconspicuous; staminal ring puberulent; stamens with filaments 3–6 mm, anthers oblong; style 4–7.5 mm, glabrous, stigma punctiform and papillose; ovary 2-locular, ovules 12–17 per locule, locule internally glabrous. Fruits 8–16 × 7–16 mm, globose, smooth, glabrous; dark purple or whitish when ripe; seeds 1–3 per fruit, 5–8 × 5–9 mm, globose, testa smooth.

Distribution and habitat: — Eugenia platyphylla is known from collections from the state of Bahia and Espírito Santo the Atlantic rainforest of Brazil. In the RNV, the species is found in the Mata Alta vegetation and in the transition of this vegetation to the Muçununga.

Phenology: —Flowering in September through November; fruiting in November through February and April ( Fig. 5 View FIGURE 5 ).

Taxonomic comments: —The species is assigned to Eugenia sect. Excelsae . Eugenia platyphylla is morphologically similar to E. excelsa due to its inflorescences in fascicle, bracteoles deciduous at or after anthesis, and fruit globose, dark purple or whitish when ripe. The diagnostic features for both are presented in the comments under E. excelsa and in Table 1 View TABLE 1 . Fruits dark purple and whitish were found in the field.
