Sessile spikelets with 2 florets, compressed dorsally; lower floret reduced to a hyaline lemma; upper floret hermaphrodite, with entire lemma passing into a glabrous, geniculate awn. Pedicellate spikelets male or sterile, unawned. Lower glume of sessile spikelet with a deep circular pit
