Female spikes oblong to cylindrical, lax or dense, erect, distant; lowest bract leaf-like, sheathing. Female glumes ovate, acute or acuminate to mucronate, usually with a scarious margin. Utricles obovoid or obovoid-ellipsoid, membranous or subcoriaceous, glabrous or pubescent, abruptly contracted into beak. Stigmas 3.
