Species 39: Teuchophorus litoralis View in CoL sp. nov. (male)

(figures 175–177)

Etymology. Lat. litoralis , ‘living on the coast’.

Diagnosis. Medium-sized species, with a broad face. No wing stigma. Third antennal segment triangular, pointed, longer than deep (about 1.5 times). All femora ventrally bristleless. Hind tibia with four equally long dorsal bristles, without ventral bristles. Mid tibia with one pd near base, one ad beyond middle, and one av at same level as the ad. Whole body shining dark metallic green. Cerci sickle-shaped, yellow.

Material examined. Type material: Indonesia, Sulawesi, Bira , beach, drift material on supralittoral, 19 June 1997,    male (No. 970015, leg. P. Grootaert) .

Male

Body length 1.5 mm; wing length 1.45 mm.

Head. Frons and face with shining greenish black ground colour. Face broad, below about as wide as basal depth of third antennal segment. Palpi small, yellowish brown, each with a small black apical bristlet. Rostrum brown. Occiput shining greenish black. Chaetotaxy as usual; two tiny postocellars. Postocular cilia uniseriate, black above, yellow beneath. Antenna (figure 175): dark brown; apex of third segment lighter brown. Second segment with very short marginal bristlets, that are longest above. Third segment triangular, pointed, about 1.5 times as long as deep. Arista dorsal, about 2.5 times as long as antenna, very shortly pubescent.

Thorax. Thorax, including scutellum and pleurae, with shining dark metallic green ground colour. Chaetotaxy as usual; acr uniseriate, very short. Scutellum with two marginals, without lateral hairs. No propleural bristles.

Legs. Legs, including coxae, yellow. Mid coxa with a vague brownish longitudinal stripe.

Fore leg. Coxa anteriorly with short pale hairs that grow longer towards apex of coxa. Femur with a very weak, pale preapical pv. Tibia a little shorter than femur, without bristles or serration. A small black bristlet at ventral base of first tarsal segment. Length of tibia and tarsal segments (in mm): 0.4: 0.25: 0.1:0.07: 0.06:0.07.

Mid leg. Coxa bearing only short pale hairs. Femur with very small preapical av and pv. Tibia slightly longer than femur; one pd near base, one ad beyond middle, one av at same level as the ad, and a circlet of apicals. Length of tibia and tarsal segments (in mm): 0.6:0.25:0.15: 0.1:0.08: 0.08.

Hind leg. Coxa with a short, weak, black exterior bristle. Femur (figure 176) without bristles, even with a weak preapical av. Tibia (figure 176) about as long as femur; four equally long dorsal bristles, slightly longer than diameter of tibia, and in between them some shorter and weaker bristles; near base a small ad; on basal third a weak ventral bristle. First tarsal segment feebly thickened, bearing a small ventral bristle, and two small apical spinules. Length of tibia and first tarsal segment (other segments are broken off): 0.56:0.15.

Wing. Wing (figure 176) hyaline, without stigma; costa not thickened. r4+5 and m1+2 apically nearly parallel (weakly diverging). No anal vein. Halters pale yellow. Squamae pale yellow, with a narrow dark brown border, and brown cilia.

Abdomen. Abdomen entirely shining dark metallic green. Hairs and hindmarginal bristlets on terga very short, black. Hypopygium dark brown; cerci yellow, sickle-shaped (long and narrow); surstyli finger-shaped, dark brown.

Female Unknown.
