Species 35: Teuchophorus minor sp. nov. (male)

Etymology. Lat. minor ‘rather small’, alludes to the very small size of the species.

Diagnosis. Very small species, without wing stigma. Eyes separated on face. Third antennal segment yellow, about as long as deep, pointed. Hypopygium small; cerci yellow, sickle-shaped. All femora without bristles. Hind tibia dorsally with an irregular row of short bristles, only one of which is longer than diameter of tibia. Mid tibia ventrally without bristles.

Material examined. Type material: Indonesia, Irian Jaya, Nabire, Topo , large swamp forest near river, 24 April 1997,    male (No. 970033, leg. P. Grootaert) .

Male

Body length 1.0 mm; wing length 1.1 mm.

Head. Frons and face with shining greenish black ground colour. Face at its narrowest point more than half as long as depth of third antennal segment. Palpi small, brownish yellow, each with a small, black apical bristle. Rostrum yellow. Occiput blackish. Chaetotaxy as usual; no postocellars. Postocular cilia uniseriate, very short, black above, yellowish (?) below. Antenna (figure 155): short; first and second segments brown; third segment yellow. Marginal bristlets on second segment very short. Third segment about as long as deep, pointed. Arista dorsal, less than three times as long as antenna, very shortly pubescent; basal aristal segment slightly shorter than third antennal segment.

Thorax. Thorax dorsally shining dark metallic green; sides of mesoscutum and scutellum with a brownish hue. Pleurae brown, partly yellowish brown. Chaetotaxy as usual; acr uniseriate, very short. Scutellum with two marginals, without lateral hairs. No propleural bristles.

Legs. Legs, including coxae, yellow. Mid coxa with a brownish vertical stripe.

Fore leg. Coxa anteriorly with short pale hairs, at apex with a few yellowish brown bristly hairs. Femur without bristles. Tibia slightly longer than femur, without bristles; an inconspicuous, pale dorsal serration. At ventral base of first tarsal segment two minute black spinules. Length of tibia and tarsal segments (in mm): 0.3:0.15:0.07: 0.05:0.04:0.05.

Mid leg. Coxa with short pale hairs, without bristles. Femur without bristles; only short and thin preapical av and pv. Tibia about as long as femur; two ad, one short pd, no ventral bristles. Length of tibia and tarsal segments (in mm): 0.4:0.2: 0.08: 0.06:0.05: 0.06.

Hind leg. Coxa with a very weak, pale exterior bristle. Femur (figure 156) without bristles; anteroventrally near tip a few short, yellow hairs. Tibia (figure 156) longer than femur; dorsally an irregular row of short bristles, only one of which (below middle) is a little longer than diameter of tibia. Length of tibia and tarsal segments (in mm): 0.42:0.09:0.12: 0.08: 0.06:0.06.

Wing. Wing (figure 157) hyaline, with yellowish brown veins. No stigma; costa not thickened. r4+5 and m1+2 apically nearly parallel. No anal vein. Halters pale yellow. Squamae small, yellow, with short dark cilia.

Abdomen. Abdomen brown. Hairs and hind-marginal bristlets on terga very short, dark. Hypopygium (figure 158) small, yellowish brown; cerci small, yellow, sickle-shaped; their tips directed to the dark, pointed surstyli.
