Species 56: Teuchophorus fimbritibia sp. nov. (male and female) (figures 208–212)

Etymology. Lat. fimbria, ‘a fringe’, tibia, ‘tibia’, alluding to the rows of hairs on hind tibia.

Diagnosis. Very small species, without stigma. Eyes nearly touching in male. Antenna brown; third segment triangular, about as long as deep. Legs and coxae pale yellow. Hind tibia ventrally with a double row of long pale hairs. Hind femur ventrally with a row of long, thin, pale bristle-like hairs. Mid tibia on apical half with a row of long, thin av. Hypopygium small, dark, with yellow cerci.

Material examined. Type material: Thailand, Phang-Nga province , Takua Pa, river estuary, 8 May 1998,    male and     , four males, four females (No. 98031, leg. P. Grootaert); Phang-Nga, mangrove near park, 6 May 1998, one male (No. 98011, leg. P. Grootaert) .

Male

Body length 1.1–1.25 mm; wing length 0.9–0.95 mm.

Head. Frons and face with rather dull blackish green ground colour. Eyes nearly touching each other over a great distance. Palpi blackish, with short, black hairlets, each with a very short, but rather stout apical bristlet. Rostrum brownish yellow. Occiput blackish. Chaetotaxy as usual; two tiny postocellars. Postoculars uniseriate, short, black. Antenna (figure 208): basal segments brown to brownish black, third segment yellowish brown to brown. Marginal bristlets of second segment short, longest above. Third segment more or less triangular, with a rather blunt apex. Arista about three times as long as antenna, very shortly pubescent; basal aristal segment about half as long as third antennal segment.

Thorax. Thorax and scutellum, including pleurae, shining blackish green. Chaetotaxy as usual; acr uniseriate, relatively long. No propleural bristles.

Legs. Legs and coxae pale yellow.

Fore leg. Coxa anteriorly with yellow hairs. Femur ventrally near base with a few short, yellow bristle-like hairs, shorter than depth of femur. Tibia shorter than femur (about 5:6), without bristles or serration. First tarsal segment with two minute spinules at ventral base. Length of tibia and tarsal segments (in mm): 0.25: 0.11:0.05:0.04: 0.03:0.05.

Mid leg. Coxa near apex with short, pale bristly hairs. Femur (figure 209) ventrally on basal fourth with some short, thin, pale, bristle-like hairs, about as long as depth of femur; a thin preapical av, preceded by some lengthened hairs. Tibia (figure 209) about as long as femur; one ad and one pd at basal third; on apical half a row of thin av, about as long as diameter of tibia. Length of tibia and tarsal segments (in mm): 0.35: 0.15:0.07:0.05: 0.04:0.05.

Hind leg. Coxa with a thin, weak exterior bristle. Femur (figure 210) ventrally with a row of long, thin, pale bristle-like hairs, growing longer towards tip of femur, being there longer than depth of femur. Tibia (figure 210) about as long as femur; two short and weak dorsals; ventrally a double row of pale hairs, the longest of which (on basal half of tibia) are nearly twice as long as diameter of tibia. Length of tibia and tarsal segments (in mm): 0.35:0.08:0.1:0.06:0.05: 0.06.

Wing. Wing (figure 211) hyaline, very feebly brownish tinged. No stigma; costa slightly thickened. r4+5 and m1+2 nearly parallel. Length ratio of basal and apical parts of m1+2 about 1:2. Halters yellow. Squamae yellow, with black cilia.

Abdomen. Terga dark brown, with a feeble, greenish gloss; sterna brown. Hairs and hind-marginal bristlets on terga very short, black. Hypopygium (figure 212) small, dark brown, with yellowish cerci.

Female

Body length 1.2–1.3 mm; wing length 0.95–1.05 mm.

Face about half as wide as depth of third antennal segment. Legs without longer hairs or bristles, except: mid femur with weak preapical av and pv; mid tibia with two ad and one pd, all weak; hind tibia with two weak dorsals. Oviscapt without acanthae.
