Leatherjack, Yellowjack, or Yellowtail Leatherjack. To 45 cm (17.7 in) TL ( Grove and Lavenberg 1997). Atlantic and Pacific Oceans; Bahía San Juanico, southern Baja California (Personal communication: Scripps Institution of Oceanography Fish Collection, La Jolla, California) to Puerto Pizarro, Peru ( Chirichigno and Vélez 1998) , including Gulf of California (Smith-Vaniz in Fischer et al. 1995), Islas Galápagos ( Grove and Lavenberg 1997) and Isla Malpelo ( Robertson and Allen 2002). Shallow coastal waters and in estuaries (Watson et al. in Moser 1996); depth: surface (nightlight; Personal communication: Scripps Institution of Oceanography Fish Collection, La Jolla, California), <1 m to 50 m (3–164 ft) (min.: Arceo-Carranza and Chiappa-Carrara 2015; max.: Amezcua Linares 1996); also reported from fresh water ( Greenfield and Thomerson 1997). The southern California record in Miller and Lea (1972) is in error (Robert Lea, pers. comm. to M.L.).
