Cardium (Parvicardium) exiguum var. paludosum Bellini, 1903a: 23 , 26, figs. 7a–b

( Fig. 4I View FIGURE 4 : right)

Type locality: Fusaro Lake (Bacoli, Tyrrhenian Sea, Italy) .

Original description: “notevole per la sua larghezza dovuta all’eccessivo sviluppo del diametro antero-posteriore” [notable for its width due to a massive development of the antero-posterior diameter].

Remarks: having been instituted as race connected to a specific habitat, we rank it subspecific, and thus available ( ICZN 2012: Art. 10, glossary). This seems to be in disagreement with Hyllelberg (2004), who did not explicitly declare it infrasubspecific, but stated that “no evidence of subspecific status” occurs. Hyllelberg (2004) also listed Cardium exiguum var. paludosum Bellini, 1903 as a variety of Parvicardium exiguum ( Gmelin, 1791) . Taking into account the figure attached to its description ( Fig. 4F View FIGURE 4 ), as well as its peculiar shape, it constitutes a misidentification of a juvenile of Cerastoderma glaucum (Bruguière, 1789) . On the other hand, it is also a primary homonym of Cardium edule var. paludosa Bucquoy, Dautzenberg & Dollfus, 1892 from Corse, also instituted on C. glaucum , and thus permanently invalid ( ICZN 2012: Art. 57). Cerastoderma glaucum was found again during samplings held in the area in 1978–1979 ( Russo & Ferro 1980; Ferro & Russo 1982) and 1975–2018 (authors’ unpublished data), and it constitutes one of the commonest taxa in the area.
