Genus Potemnemus Thomson, 1864: 81 View in CoL

Parapotemnemus Breuning, 1971: 1 View in CoL nov. syn.

Spinopotemnemus Breuning, 1973: 16 (synonymized by Slipiñski & Escalona, 2013) Potemnemus scabrosus Olivier, 1790 View in CoL was designated as type species by Thomson (1864).

Notes. Protemnemus is a misspelling used by Pascoe (1866), Vollenhoven (1871), Lansberge (1880) and Lea (1918).

The genus Potemnemus View in CoL differs primarily from Periaptodes View in CoL by a strongly developed lateral carina with acutely folded epipleuron, a few to numerous small spines or tubercles dorsally on elytra, especially towards humeri and along lateral carina. Species of Potemnemus View in CoL are large to very large with a body length between 34–54 mm, and with body approximately 3.0 to 3.6 x longer than wide in most species. P. sepicanus Kriesche View in CoL and P. n yl a nd e r i nov. sp. are the largest species of the genus, reaching a body length of slightly more than 50 mm. Body shape is subdepressed with body sub-parallel and slightly narrowing towards apex.
