Lentireduvius Cai & Taylor View in CoL , new genus
Type species of genus: Lentireduvius brasiliensis Cai & Taylor , n. sp.
Distribution: Mato Grosso, Brazil.
Diagnosis: Medium sized, relatively robust. Head distinctly shorter than pronotum ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 ); eyes of medium size, head width subequal to half length of synthlipsis in dorsal view ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 2 – 10 ) and height about half of height of head in lateral view ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 2 – 10 ); distance between ocelli distinctly greater than diameter of ocellus; anteocular portion of head distinctly longer than postocular portion; first antennal segment thickest, third segment longest, second segment slightly longer than head; relative antennal segment length III>IV>II>I ( Figs. 4–10 View FIGURES 2 – 10 ); rostrum robust, second segment the longest ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 2 – 10 ). Neck 1 + 1 tubercles somewhat developed ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 2 – 10 ). Collar processes developed ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 2 – 10 ). Anterior pronotal lobe longitudinally depressed in middle of posterior portion, without lateral sulci; posterior pronotal lobe shorter and much wider than anterior pronotal lobe; lateral pronotal angles round, posterior margin of pronotum convex; stridulitrum long, total-striate type; scutellum with apex oblique protruded; fore tibiae with spongy furrow occupying distal half of tibia ( Fig. 11 View FIGURES 11 – 17 ) and mid tibiae with spongy furrow occupying distal one-third of tibia ( Fig. 12 View FIGURES 11 – 17 ), space between hind coxae more narrow than hind coxal diameter; metapleural suture curved. Connexivum slightly dilated laterally ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 ). Male genitalia asymmetric.
Etymology: The genus is named after the eminent Brazilian heteropterist, H. Lent, for his excellent contributions to the taxonomy of Reduviidae and to the development of Brazilian entomology. Masculine.
Remarks: The new genus is similar to Parapirates Villiers from Africa in general body plan and the structure of pronotum, but the spongy furrows of the fore and mid tibiae of the new genus are distinctly longer than those of the tibiae in Parapirates cachani Villiers (Villiers 1959; Coscarón 1994b); and in the new genus the second antennal segment is the longest, whereas in Parapirates cachani the last three antennal segments are subequal in length. The color pattern resembles that of the species of Eidemannia Taeuber, but the new genus is more robust and the spongy furrows of the fore and mid tibiae of the new genus are much shorter than those of species in Eidemannia.
