Male. Colour. Head light brown, face somewhat paler. Scape, pedicel yellowish, flagellar segments light brown. Clypeus, mouthparts pale yellow. Thorax light brown, with scutum anteriorly and laterally, and preepisternum 2 yellowish. Legs yellowish, apical third of hind femur brownish, tarsi appear brown due to dense trichia. Wing with light brownish tinge due to microtrichia; halter yellowish, knob brown. Abdomen brown, sternites and lateral tergites lighter. All vestiture pale, yellowish or brownish, thicker setae and trichia appear darker than finer ones.

Head. Antennal flagellomere 4 ca. 2 times as long as wide. Palpomere 3 of maxillary palpus with apicomesial thumb-like extension, with 3 apically curved sensilla; palpomere 4 with parasegment; palpomere 5 ca. 1.1–1.2 times longer than palpomere 4. Ten strong postocular setae. Thorax. Anepisternum with 30–37 setae; anterior basalare non-setose, laterotergite with 16–22 setae, preepisternum 2 non-setose; metepisternum with 12–13 setae. Legs. Mid and hind tibial organs absent. Wing. R 1 meeting C within basal half of costal margin; sclerotized part of M 2 not extending to level of tip of R 1; wing length 1.6–1.7 mm. Hypopygium ( Figs 4 View FIGURE 4 A–D). Sternite 9 large, laterally free from gonocoxa, extending over the middle between bases of gonocoxa and gonostylus, posterior margin very broadly and deeply concave, anterior margin broadly concave, setae similar to those on ventral side of gonocoxa. Posterodorsally from sternite 9 a small angular or conical membranous microtrichose lobe. Ventral medial margin of gonocoxa concave. Parastylar lobe small, fused with posterior part of ventral medial margin of gonocoxa, bearing two setae. No paraapodemal lobe identifiable. Lateral part of gonocoxa drawn into a posterolateral lobe about one third of length of basal part of gonocoxa. Setae on posterolateral lobe of gonocoxa and on dorsal side of gonocoxa similar to those on ventral side. Dorsal medial margin of gonocoxa simple, forming a continuous curved margin with posterolateral lobe of gonocoxa. Ventrally from dorsal medial margin of gonocoxa and covered by it a platelike lobe with aggregation of ca. 10 setae and a flame-shaped megaseta. Two juxtagonostylar setae present, arising from separate basal bodies: ventral one apically whip-like flattened megaseta; dorsal one flattened, well dilated megaseta with subapical whip-like branch. Posteriorly from juxtagonostylar megasetae a stronger seta deviating from other setosity. Gonostylus flat, subquadrangular, with 5–6 setae at apex. Aedeagus subtriangular, with weak lateral shoulders, with strongly laterad curved apodemes, apex straight, not curved ventrad. Hypoproct posteriorly rounded, extending to base of juxtagonostylar setae, number of ventral setae (sternite 10) 10–15 on each half. Cerci medially separate, apically slightly widening and blunt, setae scattered over the surface, apical 5–6 setae longer than the rest of cercal setae.

Female. Unknown.

Etymology. The specific epithet is Latin, formed by adding the prefix pseudo- [false] to the specific epithet of M. cavata , as a reference to the similarity between the two species.

Comments. Manota pseudocavata sp. n. runs to couplet 26 (to M. caribica Jaschhof & Hippa, 2005 ) in the key to Neotropical Manota by Kurina et al. (2018) because the laterotergite is setose, anterior basalare is non-setose, posterolateral lobe of gonocoxa is large but shorter than half length of the more basal part of gonocoxa, sternite 9 is posteriorly concave, not extending to the base of gonostylus and is laterally free from gonocoxa and gonostylus is unilobed. However, the new species is much more similar to M. cavata Kurina, Hippa & Amorim, 2018 , sharing also the unusual shape of sternite 9 (cf. Kurina et al. 2018: fig. 5B). It differs from M. cavata by: (1) posterolateral lobe of gonocoxa about one third of length of basal part of gonocoxa (about half in M. cavata ), (2) absence of plate-like lobe posteroventrally from dorsal medial margin of gonocoxa (large submembranous plate-like lobe in M. cavata ), (3) dorsal medial margin of gonocoxa forming a continuous margin with posterolateral lobe of gonocoxa (dorsal medial margin of gonocoxa posteriorly separated by step from posterolateral lobe in M. cavata ), (4) platelike lobe ventrally from dorsal medial margin of gonocoxa with aggregation of setae and a flame-shaped megaseta (only with aggregation of setae in M. cavata ), and (5) dorsal juxtagonostylar megaseta well dilated, with subapical whip-like ventral branch (bifurcated with one branch long and pointed in M. cavata ).
