Evaza demeijerei Brunetti, 1923 View in CoL

( Figs 1–6 View FIGURES 1 – 2 View FIGURES 3 – 5 View FIGURES 6 – 7 )

Evaza pallipes de Meijere, 1916a: 16 View in CoL (preoccupied by E. pallipes Bigot, 1879 View in CoL ) Evaza demeijeri Brunetti, 1923: 76 View in CoL (new name for E. pallipes de Meijere View in CoL ) Evaza demeijerei Brunetti, 1923: 76 View in CoL (emendation Woodley 2001: 103)

Diagnosis. Line along upper margin of anepisternum very narrow, reddish brown, wing almost hyaline, only stigma yellow, cell r2+3 hyaline and cells r4 and r4+5 slightly infumated, tibiae and femora entirely yellow, abdomen oval and black. Gonostylus with submedian inner spine, genital capsule somewhat heart-shaped, deeply emarginated in middle distally.

Redescription. Male ( Figs 1–5 View FIGURES 1 – 2 View FIGURES 3 – 5 ). Body length 4.4–5.8 mm, wing length 5.0– 5.4 mm. Head about as long as high in profile, eye covering greater part of head surface and thus face, gena and postocular area not visible in lateral view, only ocellar triangle prominent. Head in dorsal view about 1.2 times broader than long. Shining black lower frons with transverse, whitish tomentose stripe reaching eye margin on each side and continuing as a narrow line along eyes on face. Antenna yellow but flagellum more orange. Pedicel without distinct prominence on distal inner margin, flagellum barely longer than wide at base, arista yellow. Face black with short white and scattered longer black hairs. Postgena with longer white and erect hairs. Proboscis yellow, minute palpi indistinct among hairs.

Thorax black, postpronotal callus and barely visible line along upper margin of anepisternum brown. Thoracic pile short and white although mainly erect. Anepisternum mainly bare, katepisternum with longer white pubescence. Posterior margin of scutellum narrowly yellow, scutellar spines completely yellow. Wing mostly hyaline, stigma yellow, cells r4 and r4+5 slightly infumated, cell r2+3 always paler. Legs predominantly yellow, only fore tarsus sometimes more brownish due to dense dark pubescence on dorsal side.

Abdomen elongate oval, almost twice as long as broad in middle, black, with appressed coppery shining pubescence on dorsal side and white pubescence on ventral side. Male terminalia ( Figs 3–5 View FIGURES 3 – 5 ) small, proctiger stout and epandrium with proximal U-shaped emargination ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 3 – 5 ). Gonostylus with inner submedial spine, genital capsule somewhat heart-shaped and transversely cut at proximal margin. Inner distal margin of original gonoxoxite with a simple, subpointed lobe ( Figs 3–5 View FIGURES 3 – 5 ). Aedeagal complex relatively slender and long ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 3 – 5 ).

Female ( Fig. 6 View FIGURES 6 – 7 ). Body length: 4.0–5.0 mm, wing length 4.8–5.1 mm. Head with prominent ocellar tubercle, about as long as high in profile and twice as broad as long in dorsal view. Frons tapering towards lower third, here about as broad as anterior ocellus. Transverse supra-antennal silvery whitish patch occupying about 2/3 oflower frons and reaching eye margin on each side. Antennal flagellum relatively large and orange, pedicel with subtriangular projection at inner distal margin. Arista short pubescent, yellow but darkened in apical fourth. Face with fine whitish pubescence more distinct as whitish margin along eyes. Palpus slightly dilated, overlapping middle of labellum, brown. Postocular area in dorsal view as broad as scape is long and only slightly narrowed laterally. Head pile inconspicuous, longer, yellow and erect on proboscis and darkened on palpus.

Thorax black and subshining, postpronotal callus yellow, narrow line along upper margin of anepisternum and postalar callus reddish brown. Posterior margin of scutellum and spines bright yellow, middle spines distinctly longer. Scutum relatively short, only 1.3 times as long as broad in middle. Pile on scutum very short, semiappressed, consisting of mixed white and reddish brown hairs but predominantly white in lateral view. Anepisternum extensively bare and shining, katepisternum densely whitish tomentose. Wing with markedly yellow strong basal veins, other veins brownish, wing membrane almost hyaline, only stigma yellow and cells r4 and r4+5 indistinctly infumated. Calypters and halter yellow. Legs yellow including coxae but fore tarsomeres darkened.

Abdomen uniformly black and oval, about 1.4 times longer than broad in middle. Abdominal pile short, mostly appressed, dark brown to black, with a coppery shine dorsally and partly whitish hairs along middle of sternites.

Remarks. Evaza demeijerei differs from E. javanensis by the wing pattern and from E. discolor by the uniformly black abdomen. In RNH we found 3 males from Sumatra, one of them mentioned already by de Meijere (1916b), which enabled us to describe the male in detail. They are apparently conspecific with the original female holotype, although their stigma is more intensively yellow and fore tarsi are more darkened. Evaza flavimarginata seems to be closely related owing to its pale cell r2+3, inner distal prominence on the female pedicel and even the male terminalia (cf. Figs 8–15 View FIGURES 8 – 10 View FIGURES 11 – 12 View FIGURES 13 – 15 in Zhang & Yang 2010) but it differs by the distinctly yellow upper margin of the anepisternum and also the distribution of darker hairs on legs seems to be different.

Type material. Holotype. The female holotype of E. pallipes de Meijere from Indonesia (Pulau Simeulue, Sinabang, Fig. 6 View FIGURES 6 – 7 ) is deposited in ZMAN ( Woodley 2001) (= RNH now). It is labelled: “/Edw. Jacobson/ Sinabang, Simalur, Sum. ii. 1916 / 1582/ Evaza pallipes de Meijere 1913 / ZMAN type DIPT. 0930.1” [red label]/. Condition: Right wing missing.

Other material examined. Indonesia: Sumatra, 3 ♂, 2 ♀: Fort de Kock [= Bukittinggi], 920 m, January 1921 (1 ♀) ; Febuary 1922 (1 ♀) ; 1925 (2 ♂); 1926 (1 ♂); all E. Jacobson, all RNH. Malaysia: Sabah, 3 ♂: Tenompok, Jesselton , 48 km E, 20.x.1958 (1 ♂) ; Tenompok, Mt. Kinabalu , 3.xi.1958 (1 ♂) ; Tenompok , 15.ii.1959 (1 ♂); all T.C. Maa, all BPBM.

Distribution. Indonesia: Sumatra, PulauSimeulue (holotype of E. pallipes ), from Bukittingi and Pahang in Sumatra recorded by de Meijere (1916b). In the present study it is recorded from Malaysia (Sabah) for the first time.
