Length (n= 3): Body, 7.2–7.9 mm; Wings, 7.2–7.7 mm.

Diagnosis. Face and thorax extensively white-grey pollinose and pilose; pro-, meso- and metafemur black, only yellow on apical 1/5 pro-, meso- and metatibia yellow on basal 1/3 or more, all tarsus orange-yellow; the 2 nd tergum with a broad yellow transversal fascia, extending from the base to the apical 3/4, slightly interrupted in the anterior middle edge; 3 rd tergum with a pair of triangular apically rounded maculae, touching each other toward the middle on basal edge and extending from the base to the apical 3/4, maculae on 4 th tergum similar but shorter, occupies only the anterior 1/4 of the tergum, slightly touching each other toward the middle on basal edge

Description. FEMALE. Head ( Fig. 83A View FIGURE 83 ): Face black and somewhat brassy, whitish-grey pollinose and pilose. Facial tubercle at least with two slightly pronounced transversal grooves. Gena black, white-grey pollinose and pilose. Frontal triangle brownish-black pollinose, pile black. Ocellar triangle black pollinose and pilose. Occiput white pollinose and pilose. Antenna dark reddish-brown, short, ratio 1.2:1:2.5, basoflagellomere at least twice as long as the pedicel and scape combined; basoflagellomere blackish dorsal and reddish ventral; arista brownish, with few short piles. Thorax ( Figs 83B–C View FIGURE 83 ): Mesonotum, scutellum and pleura black semiopaque, white pilose. Scutum with two whitish vittae on anterior half, reaching beyond the notopleural suture, white-grey pilose. Pleura shining black, white pollinose and pilose. Scutellum shining, slightly rugose on apical half, white pilose. Wing ( Fig. 83C View FIGURE 83 ): Slightly brownish, stigma yellowish, microtrichose, except cell bm bare on basal 1/2, r only slightly bare on basal 1/4 or less, cell cua bare on anterior 1/2; calypter wholly yellowish-brown; plumula yellow-whitish; halter orange, capitulum orange. Legs ( Fig. 83C View FIGURE 83 ): Brown to black, black pilose, pro-, meso- and metafemur black, only yellow on apical 1/5; pro-, meso- and metatibia yellow on basal 1/3 or more, tarsus orange-yellow. Abdomen ( Fig. 83B View FIGURE 83 ): Black, 1 st tergum black shining, with long lateral yellowish pile; 2 nd tergum with a broad yellow transversal fascia, extending from the base to the apical 3/4, slightly interrupted in the anterior middle edge; 3 rd tergum with a pair of triangular apically rounded maculae, touching each other toward the middle on basal edge and extending from the base to the apical 3/4, maculae on 4 th tergum similar but shorter, occupies only the anterior 1/4 of the tergum, slightly touching each other toward the middle on basal edge; 5 th tergum entirely black.

Male. Unknown.

Etymology. The specific epithet “ transversalis ” is a Latin adjective referring to the broad transversal fascia on 2 nd tergum.

Geographical range. Argentinomyia transversalis sp. nov. (n= 3) is distributed in the western slope of Central Cordillera in Colombia (Risaralda) and Cordillera Oriental Sur in Bolivia (La Paz) ( Fig. 91C View FIGURE 91 ). The species is present at middle and high altitudes (1919–2800 m) in the following domains and provinces: Northern Andes : Cauca (1919– 2800 m) ; Central Andes : Yungas (2000 m) .
