Distribution. Brazil (Rio de Janeiro, Santa Catarina, São Paulo).

Remarks. HංඇർΚඌ (1956) published a specimen labelled only ‘Santos’ and wrote the following: ‘[this specimen] agrees closely with a specimen from the same locality in the Spaeth collection and is exceptional in being of small size and entirely black in colour.’ I am quite sure that Santos refers to the well-known municipality in São Paulo as well as that the specimen in Spaeth’s collection belongs to C. cyanea , thus this note constitutes the first published record for the state. However, I am not sure about the identity of the small and black specimen mentioned by Hincks. Black colouration in C. cyanea is quite common and is either natural or caused post mortem by the wax from the body (it can be cleaned by some dissolvent). But the small size is very unusual as one of the principal characters of C. cyanea is large body size, being distinctly larger than the other species of this group. I did not have the opportunity to examine the specimen, but my feeling is that it belongs rather to C. thalassina ( Boheman, 1850) , characterized by smaller size and also is more abundant in São Paulo than C. cyanea .

In the same publication Hincks also recorded one specimen from Peru ( San Pedro, ii.[19]38, F. Tippmann). Cyrtonota cyanea is restricted to the eastern coast of Brazil and the record from Peru is very improbable. It is possible that the specimen was imported with some fruits or was mislabelled or misidentified, and thus the species is removed from the fauna of Peru.
