Dichotomius guaranii Gandini & Aguilar View in CoL
This species was considered by its authors to be closely related to D. nisus (Olivier) . A close examination of the photograph in the original publication ( Gandini & Aguilar 2009), and of the original description, lead us to the conclusion that this species belongs to the subgenus Selenocopris , and that it may be closely related to D. bicuspis (Germar) . Our conclusion is based in the glabrous metasternal sides, oblong form of the center of the sixth abdominal ventrite, head and pronotal sculpture, and the overall similarity of the photographed specimen to females in the D. bicuspis species group. The D. bicuspis species group is in need of revision and we have identified female specimens of several undescribed species, which do not always express the main character defining the subgenus Selenocopris (angled form of the clypeogenal border).
