Genus PROTOTYPHIS Ponder, 1972 View in CoL
Tripterotyphinae View in CoL was established by D’Attilio & Hertz (1988) to include a few genera with a trivaricate shell, a muricopsine radula, and sealed or open spine-like tubes. This subfamily includes Pterotyphis Jousseaume, 1880 View in CoL , Tripterotyphis Pilsbry & Lowe, 1932 View in CoL , Prototyphis Ponder, 1972 View in CoL , Ponderia Houart, 1986 View in CoL and perhaps Semityphis Martin, 1931 View in CoL . The species included in Tripterotyphinae View in CoL superficially resemble Typhinae View in CoL in having sealed or, in a few species, open tube-like spines. However, species of Typhinae View in CoL have 4 or more varices and a highly varied and different radular morphology. The species of Prototyphis View in CoL are somewhat atypical of Tripterotyphinae View in CoL , as this is the only genus in which the aperture opens into an open (not sealed) channel in the shoulder spine, somewhat like that of Pterochelus View in CoL . However, in Prototyphis View in CoL the channel remains open into the aperture while the channel is sealed off by the apertural lip in mature specimens of Pterochelus ( D’Attilio & Myers 1983) View in CoL . Moreover, the radula of Prototyphis angasi View in CoL is muricopsine, having a short, prominent central cusp (Ponder 1972: text fig. 2, figs 16-16b; D’Attilio 1982: fig. 12).
