Karnygryllacris Cadena-Castañeda View in CoL n. gen.
Diagnosis: Small size for the family (10–15 mm.) ( Figs. 93, 94 View FIGURES 93–104 ). Head with a small and poorly developed median ocellus (except K. triocellata ), lateral ocelli inconspicuous, space between antennal sockets 1–1.5 as wide as antennal scape ( Figs. 95, 96, 98, 100, 102, 103 View FIGURES 93–104 ); fore coxa without spines, legs moderately short and robust with five pairs of movable ventral spines on fore tibiae and four pairs of spines on mid tibiae (spines there rather short), with rather numerous small unarticulated spines of hind tibiae. Wings completely developed and cycloid tegmina. Abdomen without traces of femoro-abdominal apparatus; 9 th tergite without modifications, 10 th abdominal tergite of the male little modified and with two small and robust hooks; subgenital plate short and rectangular, with simple styli, notch with a medial prolongation as long as styles or shorter them (that prolongation is usually triangular shaped) ( Figs. 97, 99, 101, 104 View FIGURES 93–104 ). Female abdomen with unspecialized tergites; genital plate of the female not specialized and usually triangular; ovipositor as long as abdomen and abruptly curved upwards from the base.
Included species: Type species: Karnygryllacris occipitalis (Karny, 1932) n. comb. (before Niphetogryllacris ) and six additional species: K. atriceps ( Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1888) n. comb., K. brevipennis ( Chopard, 1958) n. comb., K. humilis (Griffini, 1911c) n. comb., K. scurra (Karny, 1932) n. comb., K. triocellata (Karny, 1932) n. comb., K. grylloides ( Karny, 1935) n. comb. (all this species before in Niphetogryllacris ).
Etymology: In memoriam of Heinrich Hugh Karny as a recognition to his great contributions to raspy crickets, plus typical termination— gryllacris common to genera of this family.
Comparison: The new genus differs from all other African genera by its small size, short spines on fore and middle tibiae and robust hind femur. From the others Progryllacridini genera, Karnygryllacris n. gen., differs by its robust and small hooks on 10 th male tergite and triangular shape prolongation of its subgenital plate in contrast to Progryllacris with thin and sharp hooks on 10 th tergite and rounded prolongation of its subgenital plate.
Distribution: Madagascar and adjacent islands (maybe other unknown species occur in neighboring islands).
