(81) Camptocercus australis Sars, 1896 View in CoL
Indian records. Rajasthan — Venkataraman (1992c); West Bengal — Venkataraman & Das (1993), Sinha & Khan (2000); General record— Fernando & Kanduru (1984), Sharma B.K. & Michael (1987), Raghunathan & Suresh Kumar (2003)
Remarks. C. australis s. str. is a valid species described from Australia ( Sars 1896). Similar forms were found in South Africa ( Smirnov 2008), the Neotropics ( Smirnov 1998) and the Oriental zone ( Idris 1983; Maiphae et al. 2005). In reality, “ it is not possible to conclude what C. cf. australis is in Idris (1983) ” ( Smirnov 1998). This species group needs to be revised worldwide.
Distribution. Australia, Neotropics and Oriental zone.
Camptocercus fennicus Stenroos, 1898
Indian records. Bihar — Sharma B.K. & Sharma S. (2001); General record— Raghunathan & Suresh Kumar (2003) .
Remarks. Very dubious record. C. fennicus was described from Finland ( Stenroos 1898). It is a taxon locally distributed in Scandinavia and North-East Europe ( Smirnov 1998).
Camptocercus kapuri Battish, 1981
Type locality. "The slowly moving water of Budha Nala (Ludhiana)", Punjab ( Battish 1981) .
Indian records. Punjab — Battish (1981); General record— Raghunathan & Suresh Kumar (2003).
Remarks. Species inquirenda.
Camptocercus latikae Rane, 1985
Type locality. “Gorah tank situated in front of the L.I.C. building on Nagpur Road near Madan Mahal, Jabalpur”, Madhya Pradesh, India ( Rane, 1985b) .
Indian records. Madhya Pradesh — Rane, 1985b.
Remarks. Junior synonym of C. uncinatus Smirnov, 1971 ( Smirnov 1998) . Rane (1985b) published his species without reference to Smirnov’s (1971) taxon. Sharma B.K. & Sharma S. (1990) listed this species as a junior synonym of C. rectirostris .
Camptocercus macrurus Schoedler, 1862
Indian records. General record— Raghunathan & Suresh Kumar (2003).
Remarks. Described from Germany ( Schoedler 1862), this is considered a junior synonym of C. rectirostis ( Smirnov 1971) . Raghunathan & Suresh Kumar (2003) listed “ Camptocercus macrorus Baird ”, which is a taxon that Baird actually never described and should be regarded as an error.
Camptocercus oklahomenis Mackin, 1930
Indian record: Jammu & Kashmir— Yousuf et al. (1984).
Remarks. C. oklahomenis was described from Oklahoma, U.S.A. ( Mackin 1930). It is a valid North American species ( Smirnov 1971, 1998), but its presence in India is very dubious.
