Remarks. Valid species described from Indonesia ( Sars 1903b), very common in India (Michael & Sharma B.K. 1988). Indian specimens were subject of life cycle studies (Murugan 1976; Murugan & Sivaramakrishnan, 1976) and ephippium ( Murugan & Ramaseshan 1978) studies.
Distribution. Australia ( Dumont & Pensaert 1983), whole Africa ( Sars 1916; Smirnov 2008; Dumont & Pensaert 1983), tropics and subtropics of Asia up to Amur basin in the north (Kotov et al. 2011) and Mediterranean Europe ( Dumont & Pensaert 1983). In Neotropics, the name S. freyi is used for S. kingi -like populations (e.g., Van Damme & Dumont 2010).
