Sternotherus gabonensis ( Duméril, 1856) : Bocage 1866a: 40.

Sternothaerus steindachneri Siebenrock, 1901: 6 . Type locality: Madagascar.

Pelusios gabonensis ( Duméril, 1856) : Schmidt 1919: 413.

Distribution. Widespread from West Africa to Central Africa, southward to Angola. In Equatorial Guinea it has been recorded from Río Muni, at Monte Alén National Park ( Lasso et al. 2002). It has been found very close to the eastern border between Gabon and Río Muni (localities not specified) ( Iverson 1992; Rhodin et al. 2017) ( Map 1C ).

Comments. This species does not show a marked intraspecific genetic differentiation across its range in Central Africa ( Kindler et al. 2016). The figured specimen ( Figure 4F ) is from Monte Alén National Park.

Specimens examined. No specimens were found in the examined collections.
