Range:— Costa Rica to Bolivia ( CH, CO, LP, TA), northwestern Argentina.
Ecology:— Uncommon; terrestrial in humid forests, along streams, 1000–2800 m.
Notes:— Bolivian specimens are usually assigned to var. pachyrhachis , which has hairs on the pinnae adaxially restricted to the costae and veins or completely lacking; Thelypteris pachyrhachis var. bogotensis (C.Chr.) Alston , which may also occur in Bolivia, has hairs on the blade surfaces adaxially and along the margins. However, the taxonomy of this complex needs re-examination.
