Range: —Antilles; Costa Rica to Venezuela and Bolivia (BE, CO, LP, SC); southern Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay.
Ecology:— Very common at lower elevations; terrestrial in humid forests, especially along roads, trails, streams, and ditches; to 1800 m.
Notes:— A variable species; some specimens have abaxial veins and blade surfaces glabrous or with moderately dense hairs 0.1–0.2 mm long, 3–10 pairs of reduced proximal pinnae, petioles 1–20 cm long, and/or blade texture thinherbaceous to firm.
