Range:— Florida; Antilles; Mexico to Bolivia and southern Brazil.
Ecology:— Fairly common; terrestrial in humid forests, on roadsides and ditches; to 1900 m.
Notes:— Distinguished from related species by the petiole base scales tan, ovate to ovate-lanceolate, glabrous or nearly so, dull; blades adaxially glabrous on costules and veins. The Bolivian specimens are assigned to var. patens ; var. dissimilis (Schrad.) A.R.Sm. occurs in southeastern Brazil and adjacent countries.
