Macrothelypteris H.Ito, Acta Phytotax. Sin. View in CoL 8(4): 308–309. 1963.
= Thelypteris subg. Macrothelypteris (H.Ito) A.R.Sm., Phytologia 34: 233. 1976.
Macrothelypteris View in CoL is characterized by short-creeping, thick rhizomes, 2-pinnate-pinnatifid blades, proximal pinnae not reduced (usually the largest, petiolulate), free veins, these often forked, tips not reaching the blade margins, axes lacking grooves adaxially, acicular, often septate hairs, small indusia (usually), sporangial capsules bearing short-stipitate glands, and a chromosome base number of x = 31. A genus of about 10 species native to tropical and subtropical Asia, the Pacific Islands, Australia, and Africa, with one species widely naturalized in the neotropics ( Holttum 1969). The genus is most closely related, and sister, to the combined clade Phegopteris View in CoL (north-temperate; ca. 4 spp.) + Pseudophegopteris View in CoL (paleotropical and subtropical; ca. 20 spp.) ( He & Zhang 2012, Almeida et al. 2016).
