Eupithecia virgaureata Doubleday, 1861 , The Zoologist 19: 7566. Syntypes, at least 3 ( BMNH), [ United Kingdom]. Eupithecia altenaria Staudinger, 1861 , Stettiner Entomologische Zeitung 22 ( 10–12): 401. Syntypes ♂♀ (coll. O. Staudinger in MNHU), [ Norway]: [near Bossekop] (treated as var. of E. virgaureata in Bohatsch, 1893).
Eupithecia invisa Butler, 1878 , Annals and Magazine of Natural History ( 5) 1 ( 6): 444. Holotype ♀ ( BMNH, examined), Japan: Hakodaté (treated as subsp. to E. virgaureata in Inoue, 1980).
A widespread Palaearctic species, occurring from Ireland in the west to Kamtchatka Peninsula in the east. It was recorded from Uliassutai in Mongolia by Staudinger ( 1897) as E. virgaureata var altenaria Stgr. Mongolia (aimags): Tuv, Zavkhan.
