Sepedophilus

[357 species (2 doubtful); Neotropical, Nearctic, Palaearctic, Ethiopian, Madagascan, Oriental, Australian, and Oceanic Regions]

Sepedophilus Gistel, 1856: 267 , 386 (species included: pubescens , littoreus , binotatus ; [Note: Gistel included “ pubescens Gr. ”. Gravenhorst did not name pubescens ; he cited the name twice, that described by Paykull and the other by De Geer. Blackwelder, 1952: 350 fixed as type species the Paykull name. Note: Conosoma , Conosomus , and Conurus were misidentified by most authors and most of the species described under these names are in Sepedophilus . However, the type species for these names are in Tachinus and so they are junior synonyms of Tachinus ; all the species described under the three generic names are cross-indexed in Tachinus but most are included in Sepedophilus ]). TYPE SPECIES: Staphylinus pubescens Paykull , fixed by subsequent designation by Blackwelder, 1952: 350.
