Key to the Himalayan Ips species

Morphological scrutiny with SEM allowed for the identification of differences among the Himalayan species which are reported in the following key.

1. Spine 2 and 3 of elytral declivity ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 ) connected by a tumescent base; 3 the largest but not elongated as in other species (Figs. 5, 8), its apex enlarged into a spade-like club with a constriction at its base ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 ); 4 smaller and always placed midway between 3 and the lower margin. The frons (Fig. 3) and entire lateral margins of the body with dense long erect setae. Body length 3.96–5.28 mm ................................................................. I. longifolia (Stebbing)

- Spine 3 of elytral declivity the largest and extremely elongated (Figs. 5, 8) and spine 4 closer to the lower margin than the third ................................................................................................... 2

2. The frons roughly granulate-punctate with a short, narrow, longitudinal depression in the middle; granulate portion intermingled with some distinct setae ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 ). Elytral declivity concave; spine 3 largest with a knobbed apex; in males the costa of apical margin of elytral declivity more prominent (Fig. 5). Body stout black and its entire lateral margins with fairly dense spiny setae; long setae more or less along the whole declivity. Body length 4.62–5.94 mm ............... I. stebbingi Strohmeyer

- The frons granulate-punctate with an elongated and shining depression in the middle line; the granulate portion somewhat bare and without any setae ( Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 ). Declivital concavity more vertical; spine 3 is knobbed (Fig. 7), its elongated apex bends downwards in males ( Fig. 8 View FIGURE 8 ). Large beetles, deeply black and lateral margins of the body with sparsely fine setae. Body length 5.94– 6.27 mm ......................................................................
