8. Cryptocanthon bochilae Cook View in CoL sp.nov.

( Figs. 46–51 View Figs )

Material Examined. Three specimens (1 male, 2 females).

Type Material. Holotype: ‘‘ MEXICO: Chiapas, 15.1 km / N.W. Bochil, 1,930 m, 24.IX / 1992, 92–116, R.S. Anderson / pine/oak, liquidamber litter’’ ( CMNC) male . Paratypes (2): same data as holotype ( CMNC) females .

Etymology. The epithet ‘‘bochilae,’’ Latin genitive form, refers to the type locality of this species near Bochil, Chiapas.

Diagnosis. This species is distinguished by the following combination of characters: vertical surface of clypeus not foveate; pronotal hypomeron carinate; elytra evenly rounded dorsally ( Fig. 49 View Figs ); inflexed portion of elytron with basal fovea; metathoracic wings greatly reduced; pygidium evenly, weakly convex; paramere apices roundly angulate ( Fig. 48 View Figs ).

Description. Holotype. Male. Total length 4.1 mm; greatest width 2.3 mm. Head. Clypeus not strongly produced anteriorly ( Fig. 47 View Figs ). Clypeal teeth moderately developed, widely separated, moderately reflexed. Clypeal emargination evenly rounded; vertical surface slightly, broadly V-shaped, not foveate. Apical margin of clypeus lateral to teeth nearly straight. Disc of clypeus concave, with medium-sized punctures separated by less than one diameter. Clypeogenal suture vaguely indicated by raised area. Gena not produced, with slight angle at junction with anterior margin of clypeus. Vertex and gena with medium-sized, dense punctures. Pronotum. Convex medially, laterally explanate, shallow depressions laterally in posterior half; with shallow median longitudinal depression in posterior half. Anterior angles approximately right-angled. Sides anterior to lateral angles nearly straight; slightly rounded posterior to lateral angles. Posterior angles evenly rounded, not angled, not incised. Pronotum densely punctate; punctures small anteromedially; posteriorly and laterally, punctures large, annulate; setae fine, recumbent. Pronotal hypomeron convex, coarsely punctate, with posterolateral longitudinal carina curving toward the posterior angle.

Elytra. Transversely and longitudinally strongly convex ( Fig. 49 View Figs ); lateral carinae moderately elevated. Each elytron dorsally with seven striae, each stria indicated by two wavy lines. Elytral intervals convex; each interval with row of closely spaced very fine setose punctures on each side adjacent to striae; setae short, pale, strongly arched. Inflexed portion of elytron moderately broad, moderately abruptly narrowed apically, with scattered, fine setose punctures and transverse wrinkles; basal fovea present; striae eight and nine absent, ten complete along margin of epipleuron. Epipleuron with scattered punctures. Wings. Metathoracic wings greatly reduced. Venter. Prosternum nearly impunctate, with a few scattered shallow, annulate punctures. Mesosternum with shallow, annulate punctures; punctures small medially, large laterally. Mesometasternal suture bluntly rounded medially. Metasternum broad, concave medially; disc with minute punctures in anterior third, medium-sized shallow punctures posteriorly; laterally, punctures large, dense, annulate. Legs. Profemur strongly punctate ventrally. Protibia ( Fig. 46 View Figs ) with bilobed medial expansion in apical half before notch, apical lobe semicircular; subapical notch small but distinct. Mesofemur and metafemur with small, elongate punctures ventrally. Metatrochanter unmodified. Metatibia very slightly angulate, not crenulate; with small subapical tooth on inner margin. Abdomen. Apical sternite with irregularly spaced, medium-sized, shallow punctures. Pygidium evenly, weakly convex; with irregularly spaced medium-sized, shallow punctures; base with small, shallow median fovea. Male genitalia. Parameres ( Figs. 48, 50 View Figs ) with apices roundly angulate, not setose.

Variation. Female: total length 4.1–4.2 mm; greatest width 2.2–2.3 mm; clypeal teeth more strongly developed; clypeogenal suture more clearly carinate; protibiae unmodified.

Bionomics. This species has been collected from pine/oak and Liquidamber litter, at 1,930 m, during the month of September.

Geographic Distribution ( Fig. 51). This species is known only from the type locality in the Mexican state of Chiapas .
