Diagnosis. Body ( Fig. 28 View FIGURES 27 – 30 ) black, scutum with a pair of longitudinal stripes of gray pruinosity anteriorly. Wing ( Fig. 32 View FIGURES 31 – 34 ) grayish hyaline in both sexes; wing veins dark brown; vein M joining vein R4+5 at an acute angle. Abdomen with weak pruinosity on proximal portion of tergites 1–4, visible in posterior view but indistinct in dorsal and lateral views. Male terminalia ( Figs 9–14 View FIGURES 8 – 14 ): cercus slender, narrowing in distal 2/3, outer margin of cercus medially concave in dorsal view; pregonite short, ventral end not extending beyond basal 1/4 of phallus.

Description. Body length: 4.0–6.0 mm. Wing length: 3.8–4.8 mm.

Male. Head black, with silver pruinosity on parafacial, face, and along lower half of eye margin; frontal vitta velvety black; antenna black; palpus brown. Vertex about 2/5 of head width; frontal vitta with some small setae; face 1.1–1.5 times as long as frons in profile; parafacial about 1/2 as wide as first flagellomere at mid height; gena about 1/4 of eye height; inner vertical seta long, about 2/3 as long as eye height; outer vertical seta indistinct; ocellar seta 1/5–1/3 length of inner vertical seta; 5–6 frontal setae; one reclinate orbital seta and two proclinate orbital setae, the posterior seta about 1/3 as long as the anterior one; genal dilation with one row of 4–5 setae; postocular and occipital setae short; postgenal setae longer than postocular and occipital setae. Antenna with pedicel bearing several short, fine setae and one long seta; first flagellomere long, 4–5 times as long as wide and about 3.5 times as long as pedicel; arista thickened on basal half, slightly shorter than first flagellomere, with pubescence at most as long as diameter of apical half of arista. Palpus cylindrical, as long as pedicel, apex weakly swollen with some small setae.

Thorax black, with silver pruinosity on postpronotum, notopleuron and anterior part of scutum in dorsal view; pruinosity on scutum forming a pair of longitudinal stripes. Prosternum and proepisternal depression bare; 2 proepisternal and 2 proepimeral setae; postpronotum with 2 strong setae; acrostichal setae indistinct; 2 presutural and 3 postsutural dorsocentral setae; 1 presutural and 2 postsutural intra-alar setae; 1 presutural and 1 postsutural supra-alar setae; 2 notopleural setae; 2 post-alar setae; 2 katepisternal setae; katepimeron and laterotergite bare; scutellum with two pairs of marginal setae, the apical one crossed.

Wing ( Fig. 32 View FIGURES 31 – 34 ) brownish gray hyaline, slightly darker on anterior margin; calypteres whitish; wing veins dark brown, basal region brownish. Halter dark brown. Cell r4+5 closed, vein M strongly curved near tip and joining obliquely with vein R4+5; vein R4+5 with a small seta dorsally at base.

Legs black; pulvilli pale brown. Fore tibia with 2 anterodorsal and 1 posterior setae; mid tibia with 1 anterodorsal, 2 posterior, and 1 ventral setae; hind tibia with 2 anterodorsal, 2 posterodorsal, and 2 anteroventral setae. Claws and pulvilli about 2/3 as long as 5th tarsomere.

Abdomen ( Fig. 28 View FIGURES 27 – 30 ) black with silver pruinosity on syntergite 1+2, basal 1/3 of tergite 3, basal 1/4 of tergite 4 and basal margin of tergite 5, this pruinosity weakening or disappearing toward the middle longitudinal line, visible in posterior view but indistinct in dorsal and lateral views. All tergites without discal setae; syntergite 1+2 with several long lateral setae; tergites 3–5 with rows of marginal setae; sternite 5 ( Fig. 8 View FIGURES 8 – 14 ) bilobed in posterior part, the lobes longer than basal part.

Male terminalia ( Figs 9–14 View FIGURES 8 – 14 ): surstylus wide in basal 1/3 and weakly curved inwards in dorsal view, longer than cercus and weakly curved ventrally in lateral view; cercus narrowing in distal 2/ 3 in dorsal view, outer margin medially concave in dorsal view; bacilliform sclerites broad, extending anteriorly, and fused in anterior part; pregonite spatula-shaped in lateral view, ventral part broad, not extending beyond 1/4 of length of phallus and curved anterolaterally at apex, dorsal part articulated with anterior 1/3 of postgonite; postgonite blade-shaped, narrowing and truncated apically with a long seta at apical 1/3; epiphallus slender, weakly swollen near apex; distiphallus, in lateral view, largely membranous at middle, extension of dorsal sclerite curved ventrally at apex; ejaculatory apodeme tongue-shaped.

Female. Very similar to male but with weaker pruinosity on the abdomen, barely visible on tergites 1–3 in posterior view.

Distribution. Japan (Kyushu).

Host(s). Unknown.

Etymology. The species name is derived from the type locality, Itoshima City (Fukuoka, Kyushu, Japan).

Remarks. Acompomintho itoshimensis sp. nov. is similar to A. lobata , but can be distinguished from it by the narrower cerci and shorter pregonite in the male and vein M joining vein R4+5 at an acute angle as opposed to almost at a right angle.

Both species share the following characters of the male terminalia: bacillifrom sclerites fused to surstylus; pregonite fused to intermedium; ventral sclerotisation of distiphallus extending from ventral plate to apex of phallus and not divided longitudinally; extensions of dorsal sclerite of distiphallus fused to dorsal sclerite and deeply bifid, apex reaching tip of phallus; acrophallus tripartite; membranous flag of distiphallus absent. These morphological features would appear to be good characters defining the genus Acompomintho . The type specimens were collected between May and November on seashore vegetation.
