Etymology. The species is named oculata , in reference to the large eyelobe with conspicuous lenses, present in both sexes although larger in the male.
Remarks. The species that are most similar to Cumella oculata are C. vulgaris , C. bruinensis , and C. alaskensis . Cumella oculata can be distinguished from the other species by the large eye lobe with large lenses in both sexes. Additionally, in the adult male C. oculata the uropod peduncle is equal in length to pleonite 6 and bears 4 setae medially, while in the adult male C. bruinensis the uropod peduncle is much longer than pleonite 6 and bears 2 setae medially. The ovigerous female of C. oculata has no spines on the dorsal crest, while the female C. alaskensis has 5 large spines in the dorsal crest. The female of C. oculata can distinguished from the females of C. bruinensis and C. vulgaris by the proportions and armature of the uropods. In C. oculata the uropod peduncle is 0.5 pleonite 6 length, the peduncle medial margin is smooth, the endopod is equal in length to the peduncle, and the endopod bears 2 setae medially. In comparison, the females of C. bruinensis and C. vulgaris both have the peduncle equal or longer than pleonite 6, the peduncle medial margin is serrate, the endopod is shorter than the peduncle, and the endopod bears 3 setae medially.
