Type species: Dermatopelte budensis Erdős & Novicky , by monotypy. Erdős, 1951: 175.
Diagnosis. Antenna with 1 anellus, 4 funiculars, and 2 clavomeres (despite sometimes appearing to have 3). Mandibles not meeting medially, lacking teeth, with a row of setae along middle of exterior surface; malar sulcus present; gena concave along malar space; occipital carina absent. Notauli complete; submedian grooves of mesoscutellum present or vaguely indicated by carinae. Propodeum with median carina having an anterior split that is as broad as metascutellum; without plicae; postspiracular furrows crossed by carinae. Petiole longer than broad, dorsally with raised sculpture.
Biology. The only Palearctic species of Dermatopelte , D. budensis , is an ectoparasitoid of Zygaena species ( Askew et al. 2008). Hosts of Indo-Malayan and Nearctic species are not known. Zygaena does not occur in those realms, but species of the zygaenid subfamily Procridinae occur in the both realms and Chalcosiinae occur in the Indo-Malayan realm.
Distribution. Indo-Malayan, Nearctic, and Palearctic.
Etymology. The original authors explain that the name is derived from the Greek nouns τό δέρµα (to derma) and ἡ πέλτη (hē pelte). Because ἡ πέλτη is feminine, we conclude that Dermatopelte is feminine in gender.
